Passport validity

It has come to my attention that I might be needing a 6 month validity on my passport?

I'm a British citizen and In 2 weeks I will be traveling to Japan for 2 weeks(2nd august to 16th) and my passport is only valid until December.

I heard it needs to be valid for an extra 6 months and I only have 4 months, will this be a problem, so i need to get a new passport quickly or will I be ok?

If the flag icon is an indicator of your current location, you might be able to go to a British consulate with passport capability and get one issued the same day. Until my wife became a US citizen, we would make the trek to the Japanese consulate in Houston and get a renewed passport the same day.

Definitely check with Japan customs or immigration laws. A lot of countries require a 6 month validity on your passport, but sometimes it's not a problem. What could be a problem is getting your passport renewed so fast... good luck!
