Out of the ordinary things to see in/near Tokyo?

I a couple of weeks I'll be making my 12th trip to Japan in a little over 3 years for work. I'll be spending quite a bit of time in Tokyo, which I've been to many times now. My wife will be joining me for 1 week (her 4th time) and I'd like to take her someplace new and different. We are tired of the usual Tokyo sites (Meiji, Tokyo parks, Asakusa, temples, etc) and would rather find someplace near Tokyo (no more than about 60 minutes by train from central Tokyo) that offers either beautiful landscape, something unusual (an interesting museum or garden for example), or small town Japan feel. For reference, we have both spent time in Tsukuba before. We both like it for its quiet feel and tons of green space.

How about Hakone, there is a Picasso museum and and open air museum

If you want to venture out to Saitama you could go to the John Lennon Museum, set up by Yoko Ono. It's worth a trip if you're a fan. It's probably a little outside your 60 minute radius, but not by much I think.

You can get to Kamakura pretty quick from Tokyo

It's at saitama fukutoshin and it's only about 45 minutes from Tokyo station on the JR Keihintohoku line.

Definitely recommend this. Central. Right due south of akihabara (just keep going south until you cross a river.

There is "Edo Hakubutsukan" at Ryogoku, a couple stations east of Akihabara. Inside is history of Tokyo from Edo period , scale models, etc.

The building is interesting architecture. Also, it's right next door to the (I thinnk it's the Budokan), which is where sumo matches occur. When I went last time, there were some sumo guys walking around after practicing. (nobody famous. the young guys in training)
