Hello guys,

For the people who go to Osaka University and live in Osaka... how do you guys find the city?

Any details or insights much appreciated!

Rodney R

Can you tell me things about the dorms? The classes... the environment... i don't know..

I kind of want an insider's perspective on what being a handai student entails...

from my point of view:
My dorm is fine. The rooms are small, but the public facilities are well maintained. everyone here is nice.
I havent taken classes yet.
the environment; osaka univ is away from the city, so its not too crowded around here.

nothing bad. no complaints from me.

is there something that you dont want?

Restrictions on overnight guests!

Thats the one thing that would really bother me. One more thing, are there couple and family rooms or dorms?

I'm going to be in the Toyonaka campus most likely. Do you know if this location is convenient? There's a couple of restaurants I really like ie. Ossho, Bamia, Zaizeria and MOS burger. Is there a Book-off around too? (good for cheap video games)

Whats your favorite thing or aspect about the city?

Finally, you say the rooms are small and thats ok... but do we get private bath and kitchen?

Thank you so much menrui!

I was placed(as in i didnt have a choice) in the Jasso dorm, as well as many other monbushou students. So I dont know very much about the campus dorms. But I do know that its very hard to get a room in the campus dorms. I heard from a friend, he tried to sign up for the campus dorm, and it filled up in the first couple of seconds.
Overnight guest?

I see what your getting at...
Yes there are restrictions at the jasso dorm too... but um, some people get around that.
There isnt any family rooms here. Couples just share the same small room.
im on suita campus and I dont get out much, so i dont know about those restaurants ><. there are some book offs nearby.
at my dorm, we share baths and kitchen. I think some campus dorms have private baths and kitchens, but like i said, hard to get into.
What i like about the city? um, again, i dont get out much >< . every seems nice? there are a lot of parks around our dorm.
if you want, you can message lingfan. he probably knows a lot more about the city and dorms than i do.

Alright, will do! Thank you so much Menrui!

By the way, I added you on facebook. Rodney R.

One more question Menrui.

Did you take the language course before applying for the Master's Degree?

If so, for people who go to Osaka University, where do they take language course? In osaka university or somewhere else?

no i didnt take the language course at all. my prof said i dont need it for the lab. they are also sent your test score from the embassy/consolate.

the language course is taken at osaka university.

Another question for anyone in the osaka area or at osaka university...

What's your budget like? is the stipend enough for you? it would be really helpful if you could give me an example budget on food, living expenses, miscellanious, commuter pass, cellphone and all that stuff..

I personally think the scholarship is... *cough* overgenerous */cough* . You could cut the scholarship in halve and still live a great life IMO.

here is a quick break down for my expenditures. keep in mind, i get out a lot less than the other students. i live in a dorm that is walking/biking distance to the school. OK im over estimating a bit, its all in yen per month:
dorm = 24000;
electric bill = 2500;
food = 30000;
iphone = 5500;
dorm internet = 3000;
laundry = 1000;

the rest is pocket money.

Hi,
Just some days ago I was invited to the ambassadors house for the day of japan.There, Some people were discussing about the dormitory of the OSAKA university.
I heard they were saying one should register for dormitory 3 months before the new semester starts.

Does anybody have any information here please ? I am really worried because money is an issue for me, I cannot save more than 2000$ before I come to Japan and if I can't register for the Dorm then I will have some big problems ahead I believe.:?

Hello menrui!
I am an expectant Osaka U international graduate student this coming October. I have a question that I really hope you could answer. My friend from the Philippines would be visiting me for about a week at Osaka, I wonder if the dorm management would allow him to stay with me for one week. Although I still don't have any idea as to what dormitory i'd be having. Thank you so much.
