Okinawa and Japan

Hello. Me and a friend are going to go to japan for two weeks. We are going to say in Tokyo during 4 days, then go to Mount Fuji some days.
We dont have any plans for the remaning week, so we were thinking about going to Okinawa , so im wondering if you guys think its worth it, or is it something else worth doing in Japan the last week?
If we decide to go to Okinawa, do one travel by boat or airplane?
And do anyonw know if it is expensive or not?

I assume by your post that you are going fairly soon (meaning this summer?)? I would advise against going to Okinawa in July, August, or September because of the heat and massive humidity. It would not be all that enjoyable. However, most people take a plane, about Y20,000 - Y30,000.

As for October, sea water temperature seems to be good for sea bathing at right temperature.
Temperature seems to be most suitable, too.

You are correct about October being nice. I would point out that traveling in October, you are still in typhoon season and travel plans are subject to change. I would suggest visiting in March or April if possible.

The aquarium is quite nice (2nd largest in the world).

Okinawa soba is very good too, and there are a few very famous soba places here. I am partial to champuru though.

Okinawa soba is very good too, and there are a few very famous soba places here.

Okinawa soba noodles do not use buckwheat, it is closer to thick ramen noodles.

Okinawa Soba may be called "Soba," but it does not use what is called Soba flour in Japan. Instead it uses wheat flour and the flattish noodles look pretty much like Kishimen or Udon noodles.

I agree as well about coming in October, however be prepared for the daytimes to still be hot, later in the month it begins to cool down.

Coming by ship is an option but it will take a couple of days to get here. By plane is better. However be prepared to pay on-season rates for many hotels. Booking a reservation ahead of time would probably be your best bet, depending on if and when you come there are literally thousands of tourists here on any given day, and they all need lodging as well.

You might also try a package deal with the airlines. JAL and ANA both operate multiple hotels in the area and quite often you can get yourself a pretty good package deal.

Or...you could sign on with a tour and just skip out of the tour portion if you like.

As a reply to DoctorP, yes we are going pretty soon, i know the timing is not the best, we are going to be in japan from middle of july to the beginning of august, i have hearded that is really hot, is that true for all of japan, or is it some place that is better to visit during that time?

Hokkaido ......if you really dont like the heat, that would probably be your better bet.

Please keep in mind that some areas of Japan actually get much, much hotter during summertime than here in Okinawa. Here the high temperature rarely goes over 33 or 34 but some areas in Japan get up to 40 or above.

The sun here though can get brutal.....but then that's what a/c is for.
