I see it marked on my American Calendar? It says it's a national holiday? Anyone really celebrate it? Is it a big deal ? Everyone get the day off from work ?

I didn't know about it until Sunday, then realized I actually had two days off and could have gone somewhere if I would only bother glancing at a calendar every now and then.

To celebrate Umi no Hi I went up in the mountains and camped out overnight.

Government offices and schools got the day off. Other than that, it's not a big deal. Think something along the lines of President's Day in the U.S. People don't flock to Ford Theater or chop down cherry trees, do they?

Friend of mine nicknamed them "dead emperor" days. Birthdays of past emperors, with special themes catered to their interests, usually.

Absolutely. The government wanted something in July and came up with it in time with the start of summer vacation for many schoolchildren.

In our area, it seems to be more than just a made up holiday.
School and work were off and we visited the ocean and an aquarium (it was HOT!).
The beach was quite busy and many people were surfing and playing in the ocean.

Most people we know try to do something related to the sea on umi no hi. But it is maybe because the Shonan area has lots of people who are into that sort of thing and we do not have the radiation scariness such as for the beaches closer to Fukushima.
It was a short school week as summer break begins here July 21.

I think umi no hi is fantastic! Now, Greenery Day ... that is an excuse holiday for sure.

we didn't really celebrate umi no hi, besides enjoying the pool in the garden and drinking a couple of beers the day before.

I wanted to go to the ocean with the kids, but because of the typhoon we had to stay inside.

Some background information :

The day was known as Marine Memorial Day (海の記念日 umi no kinen bi) until 1996. Communications Minister Shozo Murata designated the holiday in 1942 to commemorate the Meiji Emperor and his 1876 voyage in the Meiji-Maru, an iron steamship constructed in England in 1874. The voyage included a trip around the Ou district, embarking on a lighthouse boat in Aomori, and a brief stop in Hakodate before returning to Yokohama on July 20 of that year. "Marine Day" was declared a national holiday in 1995 as a day of gratitude for the blessings of the oceans and to hope for the economic prosperity of maritime Japan.
First observed on July 20, 1996, the Happy Monday System (ハッピーマンデー制度 Happī Mandē Seido?) legislation moved the date from July 20 to the third Monday of July from 2003.
