Education NYU signs deal with Tokyo governor for potential Japan campus

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike signed an agreement with New York University on 14 July to explore opening a degree-granting campus in the capital, a move that could mark a major expansion for the prestigious US institution. Koike said the two sides would work towards making the plan a reality while seeking support from other organisations involved.

Under the letter of intent, NYU and the Tokyo metropolitan government will formally examine the creation of a full campus. Musashimurayama in western Tokyo has been mentioned as a possible site. The city is preparing to extend the Tama Toshi Monorail and to construct new stations. The agreement also calls for a new hub for NYU's existing study-abroad programmes in Japan.

The move would expand NYU's global footprint, one of the largest private universities in the United States, which operates international campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. During her visit to New York, Koike also met with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the organisation's headquarters. They discussed urgent countermeasures for climate change amid intensifying natural disasters and heat waves, and Guterres expressed his gratitude for Japan's ongoing support of the United Nations.

This was reported across several news outlets last Wednesday.

Well, good for all parties involved, and I hope it works well.

Behind my comment was that schools from the US opening campuses of some kind here was happening back then--later 80s and into the 90s. Perhaps not in Tokyo, but several satellite campuses were set up by different schools. I think (seem to have heard?) that most were later closed, or maybe taken over by a local gov't or something.

Similar partnerships (or whatever the formal business establishment/relations might be) are even more common in China, and I know that RMIT has a couple campuses in Vietnam.

Not sure of the business reasons behind it, but sister school "relationships" are far more common. Where I worked, they started with one, and later had a couple dozen choices. I acted as escort/chauffeur for groups on shorter trips--a couple month-long trips to New Zealand, also shorter ones to Adelaide. (I avoided choosing US locations, also UK, which was expensive even then--the per diem for an escort was far less than the minimum needed.)
