I am not sure if this has been posted, but upon reading the JASSO statistics (link), it looks as if the number of Japanese government scholarship recipients have reduced rather significantly over the past few years. Take the past 10 years for example:
Does these include both MEXT and JASSO scholarships? I wondered if the trend is the same for both.
The number of Japanese government scholarship recipients in 2014 was the lowest since 1998, where 8,323 students received the scholarship.
I think the Japanese government is still extremely generous to offer this number of scholarships. Were there any major funding or policy change that attributed to this rather sharp decline, especially during the past 5 years or so? I wondered if this trend will continue?
