A group of ten Buddhist temples in northern Kyoto Prefecture has launched a website that introduces each temple and its cultural assets in 11 languages. The initiative seeks to attract international tourists to the Oku Kyoto region, with the dual goals of preserving cultural properties and supporting regional revitalisation.
The website explains the temples' treasures in Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, French, Russian, German, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian. Visitors can view the information on their smartphones or by scanning QR codes placed on signs at each site, which connect to videos and other related materials about the cultural heritage.
Established in December 2023, the pilgrimage association comprises ten temples in northern Kyoto Prefecture that possess National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. These include Kannon-ji (観音寺) and Tennei-ji (天寧寺) in Fukuchiyama City; Ankoku-ji (安国寺), Kōmyō-ji (光明寺), and Shōreki-ji (松霊寺) in Ayabe City; Matsuno-dera (松尾寺), Kongō-in (金剛院), and Tane-ji (谷性寺) in Maizuru City; Chion-ji (智恩寺) in Miyazu City; and Enjō-ji (円成寺) in Kyotango City. The temples are collaborating on various initiatives, including creating pilgrimage stamps and collectable cards featuring images of Buddhist statues from the ten sites.
