North Korea has been freaking out again, threatening nearby countries, specially Japan. If North Korea happened to land an actual attack in Japan, what are some likely consequences you consider?

If North Korea were to launch an attack on Japan, there would likely be severe consequences for both North Korea and Japan.

Firstly, Japan would respond with military force, likely launching a counterattack against North Korea. This would lead to a full-scale military conflict between the two countries, which could result in significant human casualties and damage to infrastructure on both sides.

Additionally, Japan would likely seek support from its allies, including the United States and South Korea, which could further escalate the conflict. The involvement of these countries could also lead to the deployment of additional military resources and a prolonged conflict.

Furthermore, an attack on Japan would likely lead to widespread international condemnation of North Korea, potentially resulting in further economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation. This could exacerbate North Korea's already dire economic situation and further isolate the country from the international community.

Overall, an attack on Japan by North Korea would have significant and far-reaching consequences, both for the countries involved and for the broader international community. It is therefore essential that all parties work to avoid such a scenario and pursue peaceful solutions to any disputes.

Do you think China would be likely to get involved directly too?

It is difficult to predict with certainty whether China would get directly involved in a military conflict between North Korea and Japan. China is North Korea's closest ally and has historically provided significant economic and military support to the country. However, China has also expressed concern about North Korea's nuclear weapons program and has supported international efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

If a conflict were to break out between North Korea and Japan, it is possible that China may attempt to mediate the situation and encourage both sides to seek a peaceful resolution. However, if the conflict were to escalate and threaten China's own security interests, it is possible that China may become directly involved.

Ultimately, China's response would depend on a range of factors, including the nature and scope of the conflict, the level of international pressure on China to intervene, and China's own strategic calculations and priorities.

If dprk does stir the pot, getting the US and others involved, I wonder how much consideration has been given to that being an opportune time (or not) for china to make a move on taiwan.

Lots of ways to suggest pros/cons of that, but hard to see what the comparative totals at the bottom of those columns might be.
