New Flags : states/regions of Japan, Canada, Germany, UK, Spain, Belgium...

I am not going to respond to the scathing comments in this thread, but I think I have made me point on prefectural flags quite clear in this post. I believe that the Euro/country flag combination should be restricted to the Eupedia forum, as this forum focuses on JAPAN. This is going to be my last post on the flag issue.

Well, it wasn't clear, because my proposal was only about regional and state flags, but prefectures are neither states (Japan doesn't have any) nor regions (like Tohoku, Kanto, Kansai, Kyushu ...). If we add prefectures, it would be like adding provinces, counties or French departments... Have you thought about that ? If we did the same about Europe on Eupedia, we would have thousands of flags for Europe. France alone has 95 departments, and the UK over 150 counties.thomas said:

In any case, even if it's only the regional/prefectural flag of a country, the country's name also appear when you pass with the cursor over it (try with my Brussels flag).

I realize everyone in this topic is pretty enthusiastic about the whole subflag (defining "subflag" as a minor flag belonging to a bigger, country flag) scheme, however I fail to see an actual purpose that would justify the effort behind gathering specific flags from all over the world (not that I'm doing the effort myself, for that matter).
Despite considering pride in one's country foolish, I also think sporting a "subflag" is useless on two different levels:
1) First and foremost, from an aesthetical standpoint, a little square standing next to the actual flag looks horrible. If you actually want to show how attractive a logo in a subflag might be, I'd suggest a signature approach rather than a 10x10 px ugly square. If you can't use Photoshop to make the signature yourself, there's plenty of people who can, and might capture better the aesthetic and/or symbolism behind the particular logo of the specific subflag.
2) From an informational standpoint, we already have a location field that can perfectly communicate the exact geographical location, if necessary.
Furthermore, I see a potential equality issue. To put it in simple terms...
"Hi, I'm a [third world country] resident and I would like to have the flag of my not so popular country's states."
If you can picture that generic dialog for each person coming from an unusual country, you might realize that you either deny the request (in which case the person might feel discriminated) or further complicate your life by looking up some obscure flags few people know.
