My Uncle who served in japan during WWII brought back an imperial army sword. The images below are from a piece a cloth that was attached to the sword. It has always been an interest of mine to try to find out what it says. Sorry about the picture quality but if anyone can figure it out please let me know.

Something about Gunma Prefecture, which is where I live. You didn't show enough to tell any more than that.

The photo is legible, but all you showed is 群馬縣 (Gunma Prefecture).

That's the same bit you already showed us, which I already told you was legible, and which I already translated for you. The only difference is it's upside down now.

That's all that is available . the rest of the cloth, that must of been attached has vanished over the years. Thank you for the translation i wish i had more.

I wish you did too. I like a good mystery to track down and this one is right here in my own back yard.

Is there no other writing visible anywhere? On the sword itself? Or on the scabbard?

I am going to take it apart and see if there is anything else. I will jeep you posted

Read up on it before you do it. You may ruin something heedlessly.
