Hi everyone...
Among my other studies, I've been playing an RPG entirely in Japanese for practice (and because it's fun) and I think I've gotten a lot of good out of it. I'm keeping a notebook of translations as I go along.
While I think I've been able to understand almost everything, there are a few sentences that have given me fits. If anyone could help me to understand these four better, I'd really appreciate it.
Here's number one, said by a man talking to my character (ジュリオ). We're all about to embark on a "pilgrimage" (巡礼の旅)...:
俺はジュリオたちと違って一人旅だったが、そんな淋しさもフッ飛ぶくらい、魔法の鏡はキレイだったぜ。
My attempted translation: I was different from you (and your group) and traveled alone, but the magic mirror was so beautiful that such loneliness also blew away.
My main confusion with this sentence (besides trying to wrap my brain around ぐらい
) is the use of も after 淋しさ (what else was blown away?). Also, my translation of そんな is awkward, but I guess that's because I don't really understand what the speaker is trying to say with it. In this case, does it mean "(the loneliness) resulting from travelling alone"?
These next few was said about a girl (クリス) by her father. She's been called a tomboy (おてんば) throughout the story.
去年はクリスがカゼをひいてしまって 巡礼が延期になってしまったけど考えようによっては幸いだったかもしれないね。いくら、おてんばだからといってもクリス１人で巡礼の旅に出すのはやっぱり心配だったからね。
My attempt: Last year, Chris unfortunately caught a cold and her pilgrimage got postponed... but, depending on your point of view, that might have been a good thing. No matter how much you say it's because she's a tomboy, we still worried about Chris leaving on the pilgrimage alone.
I'm not so sure about the last part of the first sentence. I think I have the gist of the second one, but I'm not completely confident. For example, can someone tell me the meaning of the から on the end of the second sentence? If the sentence is telling the reason for something, I don't know what!
Here's one more. I've just walked into this man's house, and he said this right after thanking me for coming. Compared to the other characters, he uses very abbreviated speech patterns!
明日からの巡礼の旅のことを話さんといかんな。
My attempt: Speak of the pilgrimage starting tomorrow.... ??
It would be great if someone could help me expand this insane contracted sentence ending
