Back again!

Still doing that war manga, and since the text is so small, I can barely make out a few of the kanji. So I cut the text away and I'm uploading it here, if no one minds. The two sentences aren't related in any way.

Any help is much appreciated!

Can someone tell, or make a sound clip of how to pronounce "Kusako" 草子 for me, please.

I don't know where to stress, intonate, or anything.

Hello everyone again =P !! I'm having lot's of trouble with this sentence:

"anata wa yowaku kawaita manazashi de "shikakui sora" miageteimashita."

The best I can do is:" You admired the square sky with a weakly dried glance " Omg this is reaally hard for me, the part " yowaku kawaita manazashi ", I couldn't find the kanji, I tried to find it in google but I didn't get any results =S, the song is : "haru ni chirikeri, mi wa kareru de gozaimasu " by " Gazette ". A bit of help'll be greatly apreciated : . Thanks a lot! :

Before, it reached 41 degrees and it was that hot that you would fry.
この前に４１度に及び気温で焼け付くほど暑かった

Inside the car was more that 41 degrees so I wasn't able to drive.
車の中に４１度より暑かったから運伝出来なかった

I am studying at a science college and am learning how to use the laboratory apparatus and how to process data.

They're all within firing range, just two or three places that may be too odd. The last one is perfect as far as I can tell.

How about the other day instead of before ? (こないだ、この間、先日）（気温が）４１度に達し、焼け付くほど暑かった。

hmm think you can try pronouncing the kus almost instantly kinda run it together. ksako
i noticed that alot when pronouncing -u sounds the -u is almost silentl unless at the end of a word.

written as --> pronounced as
asakusa --> asaksa
sukoshi --> skoshi
yoroshiku --> yoroshku

I have a friend name atsko but spelled "atsuko"

On "Naruto", "Itachi no koto …"

It's of convenience that this week's episode of Naruto apparently used this "[noun] no koto" construction. I've ripped the audio to a Vorbis file for those who might be interested. It's always exciting to see things you just learned used in the field, as it were. Is the translation "Also, about Itachi, I will take the responsibility of watching over him" accurate? Oh, and could I ask someone to type out what was said in Japanese so that I might examine it further. Many thanks!

hmm that i don't know, usually if there are multiple meaings for the word like "hashi" then there should be a need to stress a part of the word.

I am not familiar with Kasako sorry i couldn't be of more help.

Someone with more experience want to chime in here?

Trying to translate some thoughts into Jap

I watched 'Howl The Moving Castle' a couple of weeks ago. After watching I felt that "It was not as interesting as it was said to be". Newspaper reviews had given it a rating of 4 or more stars, something like that.

So how do you say "It was not as interesting as it was said to be" in jap?

My own guess is 言われたほど面白いわけじゃなかったんだ。

Glad to know I had managed to use some words correctly

But saying

言われた（言われてた）ほどは、面白くなかった。

その映画は評判ほどではないと思います。。

which one sounds better in conversation or which usage sounds more natural? I kinda like the first one.

And please don't use the term Jap. It's considered derogatory and very bad form.

Hmm, I really didn't know 'jap' was something of a bad form, because that was how most people described it back home. ☝

I received a reply from my acquaintance in Japan and I was hoping for more help:

「ジョナサン、頭痛は治りましたか？
風邪ですか？気をつけてね。
米国史試験はできましたか？忙しいですね。
日本語は難しいけど、勉強して話せるようになれると良いですね！(＞∇＜)
ジョナサンの日本語は正しいと思いますよ。
でも、分からない時もあります。私も英語を勉強したいと思います。ジョナサンも日本語を勉強してくださいね！」

In rômaji (source: A亜アあ // Help
"jonasan, zutsū wa naorimashita ka?
kaze desu ka? kiwotsukete ne.
kome kokushi shiken wa dekimashita ka? isogashii desu ne.
nihongo wa muzukashii kedo, benkyōshite hanaseru yō ni nareru to yoi desu ne! (＞∇＜)
jonasan no nihongo wa tadashii to omoimasu yo.

I tried an Excite translation (to get the gist of things) and I've tried to break apart the text myself. Here's what Excite says:

"Has headache recovered Jonathan?
Is it a cold?Take care of yourself.
Was the United States history able to be examined?It is busy.
It is possible to come it to be being possible to speak by studying is good though Japanese is difficult. (>∇<)
I think that Jonathan's Japanese is correct. However, it doesn't understand. I want also to study English. Jonathan also must study Japanese."

Maybe it's just me, but this seems to be one of Excite's better translations.

I tried to translate the text myself and got this far (note: I try to capture the original sense primarily):

"Jonathan, has your headache healed?
Is it a cold? Take care of yourself, huh!
Was the US history exam able to be done [taken]? It's busy, isn't it? [?]
Japanese is difficult; however, ...
Your Japanese is correct and [polite present tense of "omou," meaning ...?]!
But I don't understand. I too [benkyōshitai to omoimasu?] English. Jonathan also [benkyōshite?] English, please!"

Might some kind folks help me get this down? I'm unfamiliar with "benkyōshitai/benkyōshite" and with whatever "benkyōshitai to omoimasu" means. I note a high usage of "ne." What's she trying to say with those? I know they are usually softening "isn't it?" or "don't you think?" type of endings, but I'm unsure here. Also, with "nihongo wa muzukashii kedo," I note that they typed a comma after the conjunction "but/however" but not before. Is that normal punctuation use?

Thanks! All in all, I'm confused here.

Hi J44xm,

I'll try to apply my limited knowledge to your questions

"benkyou shitai" and "benkyou shite" are a combination of "benkyou" (勉強) meaning study, and suru (the "to do" verb which can be combined with a lot of nouns, such as the ones marked "vs" in WWWJDIC, to make a new verb). So, "benkyou suru" means "to study."

Going further, the ～tai form, "benkyou shitai" means "I want to study" and the "shite" one is continuative, meaning that it needs another verb after it -- such as "kudasai" -- to complete the meaning. I believe "benkyou shitai to omoimasu" can be translated as "I think I want to study," and "benkyou shite kudasai" means "please study" (referring to you).

--> You are correct. It is just a way of softening her words.

"Nihongo wa muzukashii kedo, suki desu."

--> "Japanese is difficult, but I like (to study) it." It is just that, in English, the comma comes before "but", but in Japanese it comes after "kedo". So, yes, it is normal punctuation use.

Oops, sorry Buntaroさん, I didn't mean to preempt you. In any case, you did provide more info, and it's good (especially for me, as I'm pretty unsure of myself) to have confirmation that I'm not totally full of it.

I'll ask a question, for anyone who might have the time to answer. I just recently had a "moment of enlightenment" and wanted to make sure it wasn't completely bogus. It was regarding i-adjectives: I know they conjugate somewhat like a verb, but is it correct to think of them almost as if they are a verb? Or, in other words, it seems like the plain copula (da) is kind of built-in to these adjectives.

I see it in plain (non-polite) sentences that just end with an adjective, or in the middle of a sentence before "kara..." and the like: an i-adjective without any verb or copula attached. Is this correct (because the copula is built-in to the adjective) or just bad grammar?

Also でも、分からない時もあります。 just means 'but there are some places I don't understand,' not that they didn't understand at all. It's hard to say if they are using this as an excuse to study English or genuinely couldn't get it or what. You can always clear a response here first for a 100% guarantee :--)

--> I think that you are going to confuse yourself if you think of i-adjectives as verbs, although there is a similarity.

You are correct that plain-form adjectives contain the copula. The difference between the plain form and the polite form is only a difference is politeness. Both are valid grammatical forms.
