Need a word or phrase translated?

"He also hasn't handed out the usual bonuses for half time"


And I need to make a whole list of phrases with similar(but possibly different) meanings. Is there any difference between the two?
気がいたします vs, 思い出します
Is the first one 'on the occasion' and the second one 'actively trying to'?
 
しか is accompanied by a negative verb and indicates an exception to a statement (the "only" gloss comes from the fact that it's often not natural English to keep the verb in negative form).

So here, the statement is "ボーナスも出なかった" (he also hasn't paid the bonuses), and the exception is "いつもの半分" - he hasn't paid bonuses, except for half the usual amount, or "also, he's only paid half the usual bonus".

Compare:
彼しか来なかった。 Nobody except him came.
彼だけ来た。 Only he came.
彼だけ来なかった。 Only he did not come.
 
so what happens if we put dake here. also 出る can mean "to pay" as well?

山田さんから聞いたところによると、彼の会社は経営があまりよくないらしい。ボ-ナスもいつもの半分だけ出なかったそうだ.

this would be "Also, He has not only paid half the usual bonus" so can one conclude that だけ is simply the opposite of しか?

so when you get something like しかしない = だけ?
 
Well, actually 出る is intransitive so refers to the bonus itself, but it can mean "be given" (ボーナスが出る). So properly it's more like "only half the bonus was paid/given/awarded/etc". The transitive version is 出す (ボーナスを出す).

In this case changing to だけ would flip it to "only half the bonus has not been paid"

だけする vsしかしない have similar meanings, but different nuances. Using しか often has a more negative nuance, or suggests the number/amount of something was lacking. Here is a great site (in Japanese), and he gives a nice example for comparison:

（もう）半分しかない。（だからだめだ）

Hi, I'm translating some Japanese song lyrics for practice. There are some lines in the lyrics that just won't make sense no matter how much I try to understand them though. I know the words in the sentences, I just can't make sense of them. The sentences are:

1. 星さえも摩天楼を科学者気どりで着飾る

2. ポスターに見覚えのある姿 洗い晒しのワイシャツにキャスケット!

3. 聖人の生誕を 喜び祝う声
白い花よ心に 福音をもたらせ

I know that the first one starts with "Even the stars as well", so I thought the sentence started with "Even the stars above the skyscrapers" or something. I can't connect that to the rest of the sentence though. With the second one the "casket" part is confusing me the most. It just doesn't make sense to me at all because the song is about an old movie theater and some old dude sitting in there watching black and white movies. And he's wearing a worn-out shirt. And apparently a casket?

This is a sentence in my textbook, can someone help me make sense of it

"If you live film small things passing time how it is,anime, animations can depict these hardships, and those meanings held by such will surely come to mind."

Hmm how's that. Doesent really flow that well in english I suppose, btw does やる here mean "to do live filming" literally?
 
実写でやったら = if you do it live-action (i.e., not animated)
通りすぎてしまう = pass by
通り過ぎてしまうような小さなこと = small things that just seem to pass by
苦労して = endure hardships
苦労して描く = draw through the hardships (basically, deal with the difficulties of animating things and animate them)
そのこと = 通り過ぎてしまうような小さなこと
 
I thought the context was using えがく to depict, rather than かく, since they put this word in hiragana before as they have the same kanji. Well I guess it is kind of the same meaning, diff word tho.

It's more along the lines of the meanings of those little things that just go by in live action movies/shows come clearly to the surface in animation, if you work hard at it. I feel like 苦労して has a sense of working through the hardships to make a good product here.


It seems to be saying that you can get something running again after an earthquake has quieted down by taking simple actions, like changing out the general-purpose machines, as long as there is no major damage to the fittings (built-in machines). I'm not sure about how the first two phrases are connected to the rest of the sentence, though. It doesn't seem totally clear.
 
I might be reading this wrong. Can someone check on my translation?

"One way or another, the warriors were constantly stretching their bodies, thinking they would be unable to participate in the tournament."

or is the nuance closer to "hoping they would not have to"?

How do we say something is "worth" doing.. or such. Is there a particular phrase for that? For example, "This movie is definitely worth watching".

って = と

Rephrased, お前さえいなければといつも思うよ.

You can say ～する価値がある. この映画を見る価値がある, although maybe この映画は必見だ would be better. Not sure.
 
さえいなけりゃっ is then a set phrase meaning "if only" correct?
Im thinking this whole time if only it could be you. ?
 
さえ～ば is, yes. お前さえいなけりゃ = "if only you weren't here".
 
Not "contrary to" but "according to".


You should give us the whole lyrics, or at least the links of the lyrics. It's impossible to interpret those sentences without knowing the context.

The writer visited the theater many decades later and noticed that the old man is not a "real" person, but the guy in the poster.



It says that even if an earthquake occurs, 使用上支障となる取り付け機器の脱落や（使用上支障となる）重大な損傷が生じない.


Just to clarify, isn't it 気を揉む?

Where does the "even if" sense come in, and why would 使用上支障となる取り付け機器の脱落や（使用上支障と なる）重大な損傷が生じない be the focus of the sentence? I'm still not getting it.
 
The last half of the sentence explains about the machine after an earthquake has quieted down. The first half is the reason why the machine can run again immediately only by changing out the general-purpose machines or 簡単な応急.
("When" might be more appropriate than "even if", depending on the nuance of the sentence.)
 

Nope, the sentence is written as 身を揉む. I hadn't realized the phrase was an idiom in this case.....again. But now it makes sense. I think 身を揉む and 気を揉む have a similar meanings?

"The warriors were constantly agonizing, on the thought that they would not be able to participate in the tournament", Is this closer to what the sentence is saying?

身を揉む is not so common expression, but it seems to mean something like "to train hard" in that example sentence.
何とかしてこの大会に参加できないものか expresses they want to participate in the tournament.
Notice that it's 常以上に, not 常に.

何とかしてこの大会に参加できないものかと、武士たちは常以上に身を揉むのだった。
The warriors trained hard more than usual, hoping they would be able to participate in the tournament one way or another.

せん is a classical form of しない.

俺もしっかりせんとな ＝ 俺もしっかりしないと（いけない）な

I am confused on one thing though, you answered one of my questions before saying 謳歌せし was classical and this one is too. But it seems rather odd that I heard these in conversations. Is this an attempt at irony, it seems rather weird to use it , if it is indeed "classical".

1) what is the ka inものか supposed to be mean
2)Where did "hope" come from . Doesent the と describe because of the first part the second is the result
For example I think my textbook used "Press this button and then ~~ will come out"
So as a result of A, B then occurs. So why in the translation does the latter part of the sentence come and then the first part.
Yours is clearly right as it makes sense, but doesent sanka dekinai mean "could not participate" so how could they hope to participate ?

Because of not being able to participate in the tournament one way or another. The warriors trained harder than usual
