While we're at it, here are the example sentences provided in the aforementioned 中上級を教える人のための日本語文法ハンドブック:

責任者が謝罪したからにはこちらにも妥協が必要だ。
日本もアジアの一員であるからには他のアジアの国と仲良くしなければならない。
料理上手の彼女が作ってくれるからには今晩の夕食はおいしいに違いない。
彼が来るからには会に参加しよう。

This first one can be rephrased with 以上は. Then they give this example with 上は:

立候補することになった上は是非当選したい。

They said it's pretty much the same meaning as からには・のだから・以上は. Not much on the differences in usage, though...

立候補することになった上は是非当選したい sounds awkward to me, at least ことになった以上は is far more common in modern Japanese.(It's same for こうなった上は、逃げも隠れもしない/秘密を知られた上は、生かしてはおけない in the linked page above.)

I said the main clause is not always needed to be "a duty, responsibility or order type statement."

（事態が）こうなったからには、もう付き合えない。
（事態が）こうなったのでは、もう付き合えない。
（事態が）こうなったのだから、もう付き合えない。

These are all make sense.

Ｖ－からは」は古い言い方になり、歌詞などに現れるようです。

Hmm...maybe I should keep that in mind when I want to use it

Does 以上は have that same songy/poetic nuance?

I wasn't aware we were having a debate.

I like the examples 秘密を知られた上は、生かしてはおけない and こうなった上は、逃げも隠れもしない. Reminds me of 貴様らを許すと思うか？一匹残らず生かしては返さんぞ！

Anyway, this seems to be a tricky one, as it seems they can pretty much be used interchangeably, except that 上は sounds old fashioned and is pretty limited to こうなった上は and that からは is old fashioned and appears a lot in song lyrics. And then のでは had to come out...

No, that's quite commonly used, could sound written-wordly, though.

The writer of the article might think of a well-known old 軍歌; 勝って来るぞと勇ましくちかって故郷（くに）を出たからは手柄たてずに死なりょうか.

Is Hatoyama with "どう身を処す" saying his role will be managed after consultations and before a final judgment is made (to run in the next Lower House elections) based on the circumstances along with what is in the best interest of the nation, etc. ? Something determined according to the matter and the situation sounds about right...

It looks to me like he's just saying that for the benefit of the country he'd like to decide what actions to take after consulting (someone).

Ok, so it is basically "take a stance" or "follow in the role of" not necessarily implying someone with a dithering and weak leadership style. :emoji_blush:

In this case, 国益, 相談などに基づいて身を処すことが重要です

How would you go about translating this: 三元士?

I've tried looking up 元士, and came across Wonsa. The context is this: Vジャンプ WEB which is based on the Period of Warring States but I'm not sure how to translate "元士"so that it would relate.

I think 元士 is possibly a military rank, like sergeant, major, etc. but this would be better served on a Chinese site.

元子 is the author's coined word. It would mean "three generals" or like that.

Hi there,
I wonder if anybody can help? I have a little shop called Kookizu (just a made up word for a brand name!) and I'm designing some japanese themed jewellery at the moment.
I wondered if the word 'Kookizu' can be written in Japanese because I want to use Japanese writing as part of the design.
I've done a bit of research and came up with ' クキズ ' (which I believe is kukizu in Katakana) and 'くきず ' for a Hirigana version.
Does that seem about right? If so which would be the best writing system to use?
Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give, I want to make sure I write it properly if I'm going to use Japanese type or who knows what I might be writing!

If "Koo" in "Kookizu" is supposed to be pronounced as a long vowel (i.e., "coo" in "cool"), it should be クーキズ in katakana or くーきず/くうきず in hiragana. I prefer クーキズ. (くうきず looks like to mean 空気図 or "air map".)

Oh, wait. "Ki" is more likely "ki" in "kite"? If so, it should be クーカイズ. キ is pronounced like as "ki" in "kids."

Well, when I pronounce it I say "koo" like "cool" "ki" as in "kids" and "zu" like "zoo" so クーキズ seems good for me.

If I can ask another question - how would I write a slogan like 'Kookizu Loves You!' or 'Kookizu Rocks!' Those phrases might be useful for some future designs!

I'm writing a Yu-Gi-Oh! fanfic subtitled "Queen of Games". Would Yu-Gi-Oh!, which translates to "King of Games", work for "Queen of Games" as well, or is there a better translation for "Queen of Games"? If there's a better translation, what would the romaji for it be?

Oh （王） means a king. If you want it to be a queen, you should use 女王 which is pronounced jo-oh. 女（jo) means female.
