Need a word or phrase translated?

Kind of... I can try to put my own opinion so you guys can explain where exactly I'm going wrong here. Mind that I don't usually translate things literally so forgive a slip here and there as long as the meaning stays the same.

"That, and... We had Shiro with us back then.
Shiro was always with me and my sister wherever we went.
At times we'd get lost from 恵達, if we followed Shiro we could find he/she/it back.
Thinking back, they were usually there. Megumi, crying all the time, and waiting at her side, an angry Mineyuki."

I take it 恵 is the sister's name? 恵達（めぐみたち）means Megumi and the others. 往復する means "go back and forth." So the second line is like "Shiro was always running back and forth between Megumi and me." Is Shiro a dog?

The third line you have pretty close. I'd say it's something more like "even when I'd get separated from Megumi and the others, I could always meet up with them again by following Shiro."

The last line is like "at times like that, there was Megumi, usually sobbing, and at her side an angry Mineyuki waiting (for me)."

Is there anything you don't understand in there still?
 
Oh god, I feel stupid now. I was reading 恵達 as a single word.

Well... There is one more thing I don't understand: 修身斉家治国平天下. Looks like kango but I can't find an explanation anywhere on the internet.
 
I'll tell you what -- I'll give you the definition from 広辞苑 and let you work from there. This is a doozy that I'm guessing most Japanese people just don't know off the top of their heads (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

［大学］天下を治めるには、まず自分の身を修め、次に家庭を平和にし、次に国を治め、次に天下を治める順序に従わなければならない。

［大学］is the name of the literary work that this comes from.
 
So in short... "Order your house before you govern the world"?

The speaker, 峰雪, already explained the summary of the words after quoting it. So you (or players of this game) can imagine what he wanted to say from the context, just like his other quotations of archaic 漢語.

 
I'm having some trouble over a sentence - it just doesn't to sound right or make much sense. I'd greatly appreciate any help.
I'm basically trying to say "My favourite holiday was in 2004 when I went travelling overseas for the first time with my father."
私の一番好きな休日は2004年に父と初めて海外へ旅行し に行きました
I'm just not really sure about how to include 'when.' I'm assuming I have to use 時?
 
Hmm... 一番好き sounds a little strange in this context. I might say 一番楽しかった or
一番思いでに残った. Also 休日 is holiday in the sense of "a day off" rather than in the sense of "take a holiday abroad". You might consider バカンス or 旅行 instead.

You don't need to say 海外へ旅行しに行きました. You can just say 海外旅行をした. You are right about using 時. So, put it all together and you get:
私の一番楽しかったバカンスは、2004年に父と初めて海外旅行をした時です。

I was wondering if it's possible to connect these two sentences and if so how:

春休みに、私はどこにも行きませんでした
and キャンベラにいました
 

Use te-form: 春休みに、私はどこにもikanai deキャンベラにいました
 
Hi, was doing a JLPT past paper and I came across the following;
父は目も耳もおおきい。
As far as I can tell, this means 'The father is large, the eye and the ear also' or 'The father, the eye and the ear are large'.
Am I correct with this? And is this some sort of Japanese saying, or just a silly mix of words for a test?

This is a common grammar construction in Japanese. The first segment marked with the particle wa (父は) introduces a topic, and the rest of the sentence presents a comment (目も耳もおおきい) on the topic. The English gloss would be "As for my father, his eyes and nose are big," meaning he has both big eyes and big nose.

Here are examples of the same construction:
日本は食べ物がおいしい。As for Japan, food is tasty (Japan has tasty food).
学校は学生が多い。As for (the) school, there are lots of students (The school or school in general has lots of students).

あるいは生保会社などでもある程度のデータは持っていると思います。
この場合は６０歳（６５歳）を境にいろいろ変わるので使い方によっては面白いレポートが書けるかもしれませんね。
ただし、国などの機関ではないので"傾向性"の範囲をこえないデータです。

I don't really understand the meaning of "jouki", "dato", "netamoto" and "betsukuchi". I found the article from 日本全国の専業主婦の数って何人？ -タイトルの通りです。できれば最近- その他(ニュース・社会制度・災害) | 教えて!goo I have no clue as to what 上記の過去ログ refers to on this page... Is it some link?

This is the number of housewives in a salaryman household. (Although, househusbands are also included). Therefore, the housewives of self-employed business households are not included ?

I do not understand 捕捉 in this sentence. It means "capture/sieze," right? Does it have more usages?

There's nothing inbetween doraemon and this out there for you? Honestly, good on you for trying, and doing something like this will help you improve, but that improvement will be marginal compared to what you'd get out of reading things closer to your level.

The average article you pick out of a newspaper would be easier than this (judging by the fact that I can generally read the paper but am struggling with what you posted)...
 
I believe the article you referred to is the second answer to the question raised by "iloveliverpool." The first answer was offered by mat 983 but it was actually located below the second answer on the page. 上記の過去ログ, therefore, refers to the one mentioned by mat983.

If you inquire about the number of "3rd Type Insurants"at the Social Insurance Agency, the answer you receive, I think, will become a good estimate. (pay attention to ~morau. "if you give me" would be "~tekureru".)

This will be the number of housewives in salaryman households (although househusbands are also included). Therefore, you cannot capture the number of housewives in self-employed bussines households.
 

Thanks! So, what do you think is the best English definition of "過去ログ"? Also, how would you translate the whole sentence?

My new translation of it would be: If the previous poster/answerer （?), is from the same school as me, than the message source will be the same, so the different item is...

However, I do not understand the usage of "de" at the end of the sentence. Could you explain that please?

Since I cannot access the "過去ログ" linked by Answer No. 1, it is hard to say with confidence. But, I guess the original question was posted by "iloveliverpool" to write his/her class report on this issue. Answer No. 2 must have thought about the possibility that the person who posted Answer No. 1 could be from the same school as "iloveliverpool" attends.

As for the phrase with "de", something like "お答えします" or "回答します" must follow it.
 
Hi. It is a bit random of something to ask for, but I am attempting to learn how to use multiple clauses.

I tried to make the following:
'A large fish ate my car, but I bought a new car, and killed the large fish'

The best I could do was this:
'大きい魚は私の車を食べた、でも、私は新た車を買いましたよと、大きい魚はキルをした。'

Any help on how I could make this sound more natural? And yes, it could be something someone says... for example an employee explaining why he was late for work ;]

Any help greatly appreciated.
