猫をやる may be out of step with most women today, but I agree completely. Even as a devoted cat lover, I can distinguish between caring for them and the level of respect that my superiors or other people's children are due.to feed the cat is 猫に餌をあたえます or 猫に餌をやります.
あげます is a kind of honorific and too polite to use for pets. ;-)
10. I got to the nearby hospital on the 20th of every month.
私は毎月の二十日に病 院の側近くへ行きます。
I got to the nearby hospital on the 20th of every month.
毎月20日、近くの病院に行かなくてはなりません。
毎月20日、病院の近くに/病院のそばに行かなくてはなりません。
I got to near the hospital on the 20th of every month.
大好きです is fine. 大愛してる I've never heard.can someone translate this into japanese for me (or sumin similar)
"I loved you yesterday,
I love you today,
I'll love you tomorrow,
love you always baby"
and
"happy sixth month anniversary"
and I was wondering as a casual modern way does "大好きです" make sense? xD wot about "大愛してるわ" ?
Ah, exactly. Sorry.I got to the nearby hospital on the 20th of every month.
毎月20日、近くの病院に行かなくてはなりません。
毎月20日、病院の近くに/病院のそばに行かなくてはなりません。
I got to near the hospital on the 20th of every month.
多分typoのほうなんでしょうね。There seems to be a mistake in the original English sentence. Shouldn't it have been " I GO to the nearby hospital..." ? If it really wanted to say "I got to" as in the colloquial form of " I have to", it lacks the verb GO ( I got to go to the hospital...). As for the example Undrentide gave, it would sound more natural to say " I go near the hospital..." minus the "to".
So, I think the correct traslation would be, provided my guess was right,
私は、毎月20日に近くの病院へ行きます。
Thank you for all the responses.
And yes sorry about the mistake in the sentence. The original English sentence was suppose to be "I go to the nearby hospital on the 20th of every month."
One final question.. so it is better to use:
私は毎月20日に病院の近くへ行きます。
or
私は毎月20日に近くの病院へ行きます。
私はもう終わらないだろう。右手で(お)箸を、左手で(お)茶碗を持って下さい。
12.Have you finished your essay yet?
もうエッセイは書き終わりましたか。
Whether in a declarative or an interrogative sentence, もう is used in an affirmative sentence. In contrast, まだ is used in a negative sentence.
e.g.
もう書き終わりました。(I've already finished.)
もう書き終わりましたか?(Have you finished yet?)
まだ書き終わっていません。(I haven't finished yet.)
まだ書き終わっていませんか?(Haven't you finished yet?)
In that context, タメ is probably used as 同い年/同級生; the same age.
And you're right. タッパ means (person's) height.
e.g. タッパがある = tall
hope this helps
Right. もう can be used also in a negative sentence, and まだ also in an affirmative sentence.私はもう終わらないだろう。
または、終わったことはもうほとんどない。 ???
OK, actually...it was a bit of a stupid joke on my part since I thought you were referring only to 終わる。 もう終わらない (I'll never finish) is an unlikely response and まだ also doesn't seem to work with the affirmative. Just like it makes my head hurt to have to think of まだ雨が止んでいない or もう雨が止んだ。Right. もう can be used also in a negative sentence, and まだ also in an affirmative sentence.
もうこれ以上戦えない。(I can't fight anymore.)
彼とはもう二度と会わない。(I would never see him again.)
まだ戦える。(I can still fight.)
まだ雨は降り続いている。(It's still raining.)
The meanings are completely changed from "yet/already", though.
(I should have put the precondition "as for yet/already context" on my post above.)
否定文の中の「もう」は「ない」を強調するような役割になりますね。だから「もうできない」とか「もう言わない」とかの可能形・意思形で使われることが多いです。「もう終わらない」は妙だけど、「もう終われない」はありえそうな感じしませんか?OK, actually...it was a bit of a stupid joke on my part since I thought you were referring only to 終わる。 もう終わらない (I'll never finish) is an unlikely response and まだ also doesn't seem to work with the affirmative. そうですね。「もう」というのは、肯定文には制限されていないです。 しかし、この場合は、
「もう終わらない」という反応も一般的にはあまり聞かないでしょうね。と言いたかったのですよ。
Ah, exactly. Sorry.
確かに「病院の近くに行く」っていう状況あんまりないですもんね。
Hi!
This time I think it's more of a grammar than a translation problem.
解けそうで解けなくて
I understand this as "not being able to solve something", correct? but how is this grammar actually used? I didn't find it in my grammar book, but maybe I looked in the wrong place...
Thanks!
Let us say you are trying to solve a math problem which looks very simple. However, when you actually start working on it, while you come close to solving it, you don't quite make it.
I saw this and was curious to both the translation and meaning
何十年、何百年、何千年、時を超えよう、君を愛してる
There is some chinese and japanese following afterwards. Thank you for your help!
等比関数列 generally means 等比数列(geometric progression).I found this "nice" kanji chain, which names some kind of math problem (or something)...
等比関数列型
I tried to break the chain up (my dictionaries don't have the complete word) and I came up with 2 possible meanings, but I had to either leave out 関 or 列... so I was wondering what it actually really means
a.) geometric linear function
b.) geometric linear progression
等比 - geometric
関数 - function
数列 - progression
型 - linear
Thanks
How the song is understandable : Let's cross over/walk through the span of life (together).何十年
nanjuu nen
Tens of years
何百年
nanhyaku nen
Hundreds of years
何千年
nansennen
Thousands of years
時を超えよう
toki wo koeyou
We cross over time
君を愛してる
kimi wo aishiteru
I love you.
So...
"We cross over time for tens of years, hundreds of years, thousands of years. I love you."
Actually, with this construction of ~は~が~です, the meaning would be more like,シドニーは人や店が大きくてにぎやかです
→ Sydney, with all its people and shops, is large and bustling.
