Technology might be a helpful tool to cope with Japan's shrinking labour force, but its adoption might prove more difficult than anticipated: a publicly financed delivery service by the Katsuura City in Chiba using a drone and electric vehicles will be shut down at the end of March after it received not a single order using the drone over a year.

Katsuura, Chiba Prefecture, had planned to provide subsidies totalling about 100 million JPY (approx. USD 666,000) over three fiscal years starting from 2022 but decided not to include these in the budget for fiscal 2024, the project's final year due to lack of demand.

Honestly, though, I think this is very healthy. The local government is trying new ways to solve problems, reviewing the results, and acting accordingly. Not every idea will be a smashing success.
