By the way I see you have been asking about the deadlines. According to MEXT regarding Selection and Notification: "Each person who has passed this primary screening is required to contact directly the Japanese university of his/her choice and obtain admission
as a graduate student or research student, or a letter of provisional acceptance as a research student (hereinafter referred to as "Admission") by the end of August. In order to obtain Admission, candidates can gain information on office for international students of each university, websites to search universities and researchers, etc from the Japanese diplomatic mission."

Here in Mexico the deadline to submit the original letter is September 22 so, for example, in the case of the letter I just received by email from Ritsumeikan I will have to go to the embassy as soon as I receive the post, which will be within next week.

What ew have mention dat's same foh every1 except de date for submission on 'LETTER of PREFERENCE'. But was bit confusing weather we should contact universities in JAPAN once the deadline (Provide by EOJ) is over!!

I think the deadline (29th August) is appropriate for national universities. But not for all national universities. May be still some universities can accept tha candidates. And may be it's not like communicating with any university after 29th August is strictly prohibited!!! Is it?? So basically, was in dilemma!!!

I'm a little confused because you talk about a letter of PREFERENCE which I don't know if it is the same as the Letter of Provisional Acceptance. Letter of Preference sounds like the Placement Preference Form to me. I copy & pasted that paragraph from the 2014 document. I have checked the one from MEXT website (JAPANESE GOVERNMENT ﾂ（MONBUKAGAKUSHO:MEXTﾂ）SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2015ﾂ（RESEARCH STUDENTSﾂ）ﾂ：窶｢ﾂｶ窶｢窶昶?ｰﾃ闇?wﾂ湘?/url]) and here under SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION point 5 it says:

"Each person who has passed this primary screening is required to contact directly the Japanese university of his/her choice in order to obtain admission as regular student for a degree or Research Student(non-regular student)in graduate courses, or a letter of provisional acceptance as a research student (hereinafter referred to as "Admission") by the 29th of August. Note: Candidates are not allowed to contact Japanese universities after the 30th of August."

I understand there's a deadline for contacting the universities but not to receive the Letter of Acceptance. I believe that deadline depends on your local embassy. I sent my documents to Ritsumeikan since July and as you can see it took more than a moth to obtain a response.

BRAVO: Even the Letter of Acceptance says that we are to contact the universities by August 29. You can try contacting them, of course, but I guess that most universities will follow the deadline. It's Japan, after all. And some universities/graduate schools have their own schedules for processing the applications. But it can't hurt to try if you still need to get a LoA. Just make sure you attach the certificate of passing the first screening and the application documents when contacting the university.

the last date to contact the universities to ask for LOA is strictly 29th Aug....and for sending the preference for along with pledge letter is 26th sep(India)....about the final outcome we can all guess and hope.......... Best of luck buddy..

Hi guys,

ive been able to get all my Letters of acceptance and now have to just decide on my preferences.

one of my supervisors seems much more helpful than the other, how important do you guys think it is to have a supervisor that will help you out ?

also do you guys think that the 6 month japanese course will be anywhere near enough to do a masters course in japanese ?
 
The faculty meeting at Tokyo U was held yesterday and the Certificate of Acceptance is on the way to me now, which means I've also got accepted by all three universities.

It never hurts to have a helpful supervisor, but I think it also depends on your field of study and your preferences. Someone might prefer a supervisor who spends a lot of time with the students, someone else could prefer to do things more on their own. But if you are not settled on your preferences yet, you could use the supervisors as a crucial factor for your final decision.

Have you ever taken some Japanese classes before? If not, I am afraid it will not be anywhere near enough to do master's in Japanese. Well, if you started now and devoted a lot of time and effort to it, the chances would be much better, but still low. You'd have to take into account that you would put yourself to a disadvantage because there would probably be a lot of things you wouldn't understand in the lectures.

yeah i have been studying japanese for a couple of years, but i am still not confident to do a masters completely in japanese.

i feel a good supervisor will be very useful for me, but dont know if it would be so useful as to make up doing the whole course in japanese.
 

Have you taken any JLPT exam before?

If I were you, I'd make sure that the uni I put on the first place offers mandatory lectures in English. That way, it might be possible to try taking Japanese lectures and switch to the English ones if you found it too high of an obstacle. You should also try to focus on learning vocabulary you can come across with in your field.
 
I think my decision might be made for me by the price of apartments in Tokyo. I will be going with my partner, and waseda doesnt seem to have dorms for 2 people that are under 150,000.

That is basically all my monthly allowance for rent. Ive found other studio apartments for cheaper but a studio apartment for 2 people doesnt really work (ive done it before)

Has anyone else gone with there partner to Tokyo ?

I'm here in Tokyo with my wife. Our first apartment was 144k/mth and the current one is 170k/mth.

Actually we were offered a dorm in odaiba for families that was only around 70-80k for 80 sqm! The trouble is that it is expensive and time-consuming to travel in and out of odaiba so we declined it. Wife was pregnant then too so we wanted to be near the hospitals.
 
A bit late, but I'm also open to questions if anyone wants to ask something. Though, I think some questions might be better asked and answered here so that some other people who intend to apply for the scholarship in the future might be able to find some answers they would be looking for.

yeah the odaiba dorms look quite nice but the commute looks like it would be a killer.

So is everyone just waiting for confirmation. I received all my letters of acceptance and gave my preferences to the embassy which have been sent to Tokyo. They said i should hopefully find out before by December but it could be later.

They said National > Public > Private when the panel chooses which uni for you.

I applied for the MEXT scholarship in the UK and passed the interviews etc. I have applied for Waseda and Nagoya University and received letters of acceptance back, now just waiting for the results like everyone here! I'd love to go to Waseda and eventually I want to complete a masters too.

My aim is PhD at Graduate School of Health and Sport Sciences at Waseda ( finished my master in pharmacy)
