Hi, Daryk. Good for you if it went well ! Didn't you get any trouble during the advanced part? If you were only two it's a good thing, I guess your chances are quite high, indeed. Waow it really lasted 30 minutes? You know if it was the same for the other person? In France in lasts roughly 10-15 minutes normally.

You know when you're supposed to get the answer?
 
Haha I hope it went well... who knows maybe I bombed it and I won't get recommended. Yeah the advanced part was very very advanced! Haha. It took a lot of time. Yeah it was a lot of time but because there was only two of us I don't think they were worried about time. I'm not sure how long it lasted for the other person though, she is the one that posted on the first page of the forum with the snake picture.

They said it will take a week or slightly longer for the results! Fingers crossed.
 
Yes, I suspected it was her indeed, hope it went well for her too. If you felt at ease and the interview went well, I think you're almost sure to get recommended, in France they recommended people with an intermediate level who got a lot of trouble during the interview (me haha), then I think your chances are high.
 
I couldn't help myself and I sent an email to the embassy. They replied instantly and told me that the results usually come around August from Japan. So does that mean that I made it through the first screening and that they are recommending me to Japan?

Someone told me that they don't tell you anything from the embassy if you have passed the first screening or not. That you'll just be contacted in summer if you were accepted or not. If you don't get any answer by then means that you didn't make it LOL. So this was the kind of answer I was expecting to get from the embassy.

Yes it depends on the country actually. Some tell you they're going to send your application to Japan, and some tell nothing until August. In my uni we have some people from Belgium (since France and Belgium are very close) and when they applied for MEXT, the french students got an answer in march/ april for the first screening and the belgium students got nothing, they had to wait until august, I don't know why it's changing from one country to another, I guess they don't want to give you false hope since the first screening is nothing official, I don't know...

Anyway, good luck to you it's gonna be a long wait, but I guess they're sending your application, otherwise you wouldn't have to wait this long.
 
They actually give you false hopes when they don't tell you anything about the first screening and you find out in August that you weren't selected for the first screening lol.
It's going to be a long and painful wait.

@Orapsag How was the interview for you?
 
I just heard from the Consulate General of Japan in Denver. I have been recommended to Tokyo for the second screening, and have passed the first screening. I was so worried because this year in America was different than past years. It seems that in the past years each of the Consulate's (there are a lot) in America decided who to recommend but this year all the interviewees were sent to the Embassy and they decided. I think the budget this year is smaller and the amount of people they can recommend has decreased. So I'm grateful to have passed the first screening and be recommended.

Now I'm worried about the second screening. It seems that normally people don't get turned down for the second screening in Tokyo, but last year because of budget cuts there seems to have been a lot of people that were turned down in other countries. (I can't find anything out about America... why is America lacking so much information haha) But they said I will find out late May about whether I am accepted, and mid June what school I will be going to.

@Oaneyl I just read the 2016-2017 forum for this same thing and noticed that you got turned down last year in the final stage! I'm so sorry! I hope that you get it this year, you deserve it!
 
@Oaneyl It's hard to say but I guess it was pretty... normal? I didn't even bother writing about it there because there wasn't anything interesting about it I guess. It was 15 mins long (measured with a goddamn timer!) and asides from me needing to introduce myself and explain why I chose TUFS as my first university the embassy people only asked very practical questions, for example can I cook since it might need to prepare food for myself in Japan, would I be willing to partake in various events like visiting a primary school or would I help students of the Polish Studies if they needed something. I answered all the questions, messed up a few words here and there but overall I guess it was pretty decent considering my level of Japanese. One thing that surprised me was that they didn't ask me about the research I would want to conduct at all. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I'm in my 2nd year and in Poland graduation thesis is written on the 3rd year, so it wasn't that important yet?
By the way a whopping 17 people passed the written exam, the interviews took up the whole day and the section of the embassy which conducted them needed to be closed for the whole day!
 
@Daryk Childs Thank you very much ! I hope you will pass the second screening as well, congrats for passing the first one. Considering your level of japanese, I'd say all the odds are in your favour And yes as you saw, there are budget cuts, unfortunately. Last year, the most important to them was the japanese level, only people with a N1 level (in my country, not sure if it's the same for the other countries) passed the 2nd screening. Let's hope they will be more accommodating this year... Anyway, the other french students who passed the 1st screening here are way better than me and passed all their exams with good grades, which is not my case... So I'm already ready for being rejected once again haha, just hoping for a miracle. By the way, it seems like in america you're gonna get the results pretty early, in France they told us we would know about the results in late july.

@Orapsag Glad to know it went well for you, since you were quite worried about your skills in japanese ! And yes, 17 it's a lot ! Do you know if you will get news about the first screening?
 
I don't really know if it went well since every applicant was saying that it was easy for them... It seems nearly impossible to guess what they really want to hear during the interview! According to my professor we will be informed about the results in June, so it's a pretty long wait. At least I can get my mind off it for now and focus on other things, I am really glad for that.
 
＠Orapsag - Did they inform you that you have passed the first screening? Or just told you to wait until June?
 
@alchie They just told me to wait. I actually learned about screenings from this website, since no one in Poland uses this term. For us, or at least for my university, it's just pass the test->get interviewed->wait until June for results.
 
I see. I guess it's the same here. And how many get selected in the end in June? Do you know about past years?
 
@alchie No, sorry, I don't know. They do not have a set number of people they can send, it changes every year depending on how many people passed the exam and what budget do they have. Apparently it's pretty rare to get rejected after the interview so each year around 10 people should be getting the scholarship.
 
I see, I guess the process in Poland is similar to the one in my country. There are very few who apply through the embassy here（one to three people get selected each year I guess). Most of them go with the university recommendation because its easier.
 
I received contact from the consulate and my application has been sent to Japan for the second screening. I was told I would know if I get the scholarship by late May and would be told my placement sometime in June. I'm not sure if these are accurate estimations though, especially if the rest of you all are saying you won't find out until July. Maybe different countries are notified at different times? Strange.
 
Hi Kyrie, congrats for passing the 1st screening. Yes it depends on your country but if we refer to the past years, the deadline is not always respected. Last year, the embassy sent us the results being almost 1 month late, and I saw in a thread of 2013 or something like that the results were sent with 2 months delay back to this year. It seems to be nothing but an estimation.
 
Hi , I have applied for MEXT this year. But i have included only one university name and that is University of Tokyo. will my application get rejected because of the single university? Please reply

Hi !
You applied for the japanese studies (language and culture) scholarship, right? If so, I don't know if I'm 100% right, but you had the possibility to check if you wanted MEXT to assign another university in case you were rejected by your university choices. It depends on the boxes you checked I think. If you checked in your application that you didn't want to be assigned to another university, if the university of Tôkyô doesn't accept you, you will get rejected as well. But if you checked in your application the box saying that you would be fine with another uni assigned by MEXT, then you will have a chance to get the scolarship anyway, I think.

Didn't the people who interwieved you say anything about the fact you chose only one uni?
 
No, i have applied for the Ph.D. scholarship of science studies. I am waiting for the interview and exam!!!!!!!
 
Oh that is not the same scholarship, if I were you I would check the other threads.
 
Guys I need help, I have to summit application tomorrow but very confused on study program plan. could any one provide sample ?
 
I think you're mixing the scholarships up, the application for this scholarship is closed for the year, you should ask in the thread of undergraduate or graduate studies.
