Mental health institute starts website to help prevent suicides
Tuesday August 30, 5:47 PM
(Kyodo) _ (EDS: THE WEBSITE ADDRESS IS https://www.ncnp.go.jp/ikiru-hp/)

The National Institute of Mental Health said Tuesday it has opened a website to support those people working for prevention of suicides at companies and local communities.

The site, named "Ikiru (to live)," provides reports on suicide studies and statistics on suicides compiled by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and the National Police Agency.

The number of deaths by suicide in Japan has been running at more than 30,000 a year since 1998, when it exceeded 30,000 for the first time, according to the website.

The institute, based in Tokyo, is part of the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry.

I am glad to hear this news - I hope people working for suicide prevention find the website helpful. I feel so sad and helpless when I hear about suicides. :(

Sounds like a good idea to me, now it just needs real world attention and publicity. Helping suicidal people one at a time is thoughtful but not terribly efficient. Addressing the social issues that lead one to suicide would be beautiful.

It is nice, but if somebody is really depressed, and considering ending their lives, are they really going to search for a website to solve all their deepest, darkest problems?
Im sorry to be cynical and negative, but having been depressed before I dont think that you really search for help. Sure I guess its easier to talk to complete strangers about your problems rather than family members on some occasions, but they are never going to truly understand how you feel.
I guess im lucky that im not the suicidal type, I didnt mind dying, but I just didnt want to be the final force that killed me. Therefore I would walk out on the road without looking and put myself in dangerous situations.
Anyway I know that I wouldnt have gone searching for help on the internet. A lot of people like to deal with their problems themselves, even though it is inevitably worse for you.

I agree with you, KN, that when someone is depressed they generally don't seek out help. In fact, such thing can strike totally unexpectedly, out of the blue, and like a physical blow, prevent someone from even moving, maybe, on bad time.

I was reading that it is "a website to support those people working for prevention of suicides at companies and local communities", I think this is a great idea because often people who are actually working with those who are depressed and suicidal don't get the support they need. I have never done this job, but I would imagine it can be depressing in itself; also quite isolating because of confidentially you cannot talk about 'cases' or such to anyone else.

I just read in an article that more Japanese are working themselves to death. It's sad there is even a name for it "karoshi". Many people get very depressed from overwork and commit suicide. Interestingly, I also read that Americans work about the same hours per year I think. Fareed Zakaria said that Europeans take 3 times as much vacation time, and yet their productivity is higher. Therefore working too much lowers productivity. And he suggested that we do ourselves a favor and take a vacation. I find it depressing just thinking about it. I think whatever they can come up with to help depressed people is good, because it may help someone, so think that website is a good thing. I think alot of people find support on the internet because it's anonymous and easy, so it's bound to help someone.
