Meaning of 正面から

If it is possible, please, kindly, help me with meaning of 正面から in the sentence below:

シュノーケルはわたしの表情をちらりとうかがったが、くまの顔を正面から見ようとはしない。

Maybe it is possible to interpret this sentence as:

Snorkel gave a glance at my face expression, but [he] did not try to look straightly at bear's face.

But I am not sure with 正面から. Could it describe the way we can look at things - directly, from under the brows, etc... :?

Another question is - can we replace から with に as in below:

・・・くまの顔を正面に見ようしない。

見ようしない needs a と

your translation is good, but not because of the reason you think.

正面から means where he is looking from, its not which part of the bear's face he is looking at.

Yes, it was yet another my mistake. Sorry.

I was thinking that 正面から could describe the action (He was not looking directly [from his face] at bear's face). So I was wonder if I replace から with に, would it keep the same meaning.

正面から also has a nuance of "squarely/sincerely".
