Me so confused with this sentence

Ok, so there is this sentence on my worksheet:

Kodomo no toki, ii kodomo deshita ka.

Kodomo no toki?! By the way, "toki" is written using the kanji for time.
Time of child?
Kodomo means child, correct? I just keep rereading it, thinking I have made a mistake when reading hiragana, but my brain is just not processing this sentence.

Can someone help me out with my poor Japanese? What is this question asking?

I'd like to reply.. almost 17 years later? Lol if you were using Genki, even now they do the same thing where they don't explain all the phrases between chapters, or all of the details, they start just adding in logical combinations. It's good for making the student curious, and I love Genki, but I will definitely say it threw me off like crazy as well. I was trying to find what I had missed. and at least being contained to book one, I still don't understand why the kanji for kodomo no toki isn't just the kanji for child and time. At least as far as the Kanji introduced in the back chapters 3+ is concerned, I don't see the unfamiliar kanji found in the workbook for kodomo no toki anywhere haha. And kodomo being the pronunciation for child I'm slightly lost myself. I've had a lot of answers... answered later on in the book or lessons, though, so don't feel too discouraged! You're probably not that lost!
