More Japanese men are choosing hair removal to look their best, and it's big business.
Recent market data highlights the growing popularity of hair removal, with the industry nearly doubling in size over the last five years. According to the Hot Pepper Beauty Academy, a research institute operated by Recruit Holdings Co., the hair removal market is projected to reach approximately 63.5 billion yen ($436 million) in 2024. This represents a significant increase from 37.7 billion yen in 2019, just before the pandemic.

While the market experienced an 8% decline in 2020, it has grown yearly since 2021. Interestingly, although demand among women has started to plateau, the demand for hair removal among men continues to rise. While the trend gained traction during the COVID-19 pandemic, the reasons behind men's growing interest in hair removal are multifaceted and complex.
