Hey everyone, Welp Im new here, and names Picc'. I have quite the interest in the language, but not exactly a full blown "I need to learn" interest yet. Which Is why Im expirementing right now. At the moment, my High school does not offer Japanese as a language, and Im not in Collage yet. I'd like to learn some phrases, words, etc. before I commit myself and find a class in Collage or a Private Tutor or something. I've been looking for online helpers but nothing really cought my interest just yet. Im going to take a trip to the book store soon and see if I can find something, but It appears as if its almost impossible to learn on your own? Any advice would really help! Thanks everyone!

Welcome to JREF.

Have a look around in this section of the forum and you will find many good advice on this very subject. There are people here who are teaching themselves. And IF you ever develop a full blown "I need to learn" interest, there are nice people who would help you with any questions you may have.

Good luck!

Most language teachers say that the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself entirely in that language. There are classes you can attend that will completely immerse you in the language. Absolutely NO English or any other language allowed. The entire class is conducted purely in Japanese. Though I want that experience, I don't have the time yet, being a fourth year high school student.

As for self-teaching, your best bet should be a book, an available Internet connection, and a free weekend or two. That should be enough for the basics. Then you have to join a community, such as these forums, to develop your language skills further, and to correct any mistakes you made while studying alone.
