Living in Tokyo, just how much will this hurt?

I have been searching for 2 days, 2 whole days for a single japanese person on MSN to no avail, Tasukete ^_^

I'm thinking of doing one year of my degree in japan, bu it has to be nihon university in tokyo, tokyou is expensive, but how expensive this Gaijin has no Idea :P.

so I'm looking for someone to converse with and interrogate on MSN about the general cost of living in tokyo (average amounts prettymuch as I have to financially plan this ...... poor gaijin aswell :p) so if you could drop your MSN here or add me at "[email protected]"

if you dont use MSN then I'm pretty much looking for average monthly expenses on food mainly (one has to eat, no? ^_^) and other expenses associated with mere existance; cellphone, internet, general price of drinks(hoping the old gaijin looks will save me getting carded), and other sundry goods you buy but can never remember in a crunch ;).

and to satisfy my Otaku endencies in secret, how much are model kits, manga and such and does anime screen on regular TV?

As long as you have a hobby to feed, your living expenses will always be at least 110% of available funds.
 
just to clear things up, if I do end up going I get a dorm room provided, uni fees are the same as my uni and already paid anyway.

the thing I'm worried about is feeding myself and having a decent time in the busiest and most expensive city in the world 🙂
 
Don't worry, sounds like you are well set about the money. It might be a good idea to know if you will have to cook your own meals or not at the dorm.
There are a lot of young Japanese people who go to Tokyo from their quiet hometown with no surviving skills, like cooking for yourself or managing the expense, but they make it out anyways.
 
I can cook a bit, not too much, but enough to save myself in a pinch (the usual burritos and casseroles ^_^)

I dont have any fear of surviving, if worst comes to worst I can visit freinds and scab meals X_X but its having money to eat out with freinds and go have some fun that worries me.
 
so taking into account dorm room is provided and all I have to pay is 10,000 yen to the uni for various utilities and things and about 10,000 for phone and internet it seems that leaves 80,000 for food and entertainment, would that be a decent amount to be expected to live on?
 
its supposed to be Nihon university which is located on hakusan st. between suidobashi and jimbicho stations, is this an expensive area? I imagine the dorms are in a different part of town.

whats the rep. of Nihon uni?

isnt jimbocho very famous? I remember seeing frequent ref.to it in Anime 😌 (I have to keep the Otaku under controll in japan or loose freinds I take it :eek: )

so what is Nihon universities reputation, I know Toudai is #1, but what about Nihon?
 
The place you're talking about is a long tee shot from the Imperial Palace (and oodles and oodles of Ministry buildings). I'll leave you to make your own guesses as to real estate value in that area and the likelihood of a non-prestigious school locating there.

so I take it its a good university, I hear they rank them in order in japan, which number might it be? :-)
 
I don't know, nor would I put any stock in such a thing.

I took up a martial art as my hobby (Shorinji Kempo) which was cheap except for the demands on my time, not that I cared, I LOVED it 👍
 
Very good point. Collecting bruises is a hobby which requires little capital outlay.
 
lol I've done Kendo before so I can do that as a last resort, but it was too sporty for me, apparently Kenjutsu is more what I'm looking for (less sport, more martial in my martial arts :-) ), I'll of course be looking into the clubs they have available ^_^

of course I wouldnt put stock in the ranking system, but its always nice to know :p

I dont collect bruises, I'm a full time salesman on the Dojo floor, but some of these spritely little japanese guys would give me a good run for my money I'm sure :-)
 
I think I will be doing two things while over there, if I get the chance to go - collecting many bruises while learning a martial art, and karaoke as much as I can.

Well, then there is also chasing the skirts, but that's more than a hobby ^_^

I'm thinking of leaving for september start this year (so close 😌 )

unfortunately living is something I dont have to worry about (god bless student dorms 🙂 , but from what I understand it'll be a mission to get a flat as a Gaijin 👍

most things I plan to do to conserve money are on the vein of eating backstreet noodles and drinks out of vending machines, nice and cheap :p
 
Dizzy... do you speak much Japanese? I have a 'crazy' Japanese friend who speaks very little English living in Shinjuku, well he knows what its like to live it rough... so possibly he could teach you a thing or two, and take you to the 'cheapest of cheapest' restaurants and bars. He never manages to starve, and hasnt been killed yet (I think). Luckily though you do have your accomodation paid for, so you wont be sleeping in the likes of Albert Park (which is what he had to do in NZ).
Is this through a scholarship with Auckland Uni? Congratulations and have fun!!

Yes, if not at my house, or internet cafe's it was Televison rooms in backpackers or the park... much to my disgust. It was just unfortunate that most Japanese found him a little 'bizarre' so they didnt want to help him out, including my flatmate (japanese). So sometimes I would sneak him in if she wasnt home, would buy him things and paid for him to fly to Nelson so he could do fruit picking. Needless to say he is indebted to me in some way, so Im sure he would be able to help you out with places to go etc. Anyway Im going to rely on him for accomodation when I get to Japan... but I think Subway stations would be comfy enough :P Well Im off to Thailand tomorrow, so I dont know when I will be able to get in touch with him... maybe if you PM me your email address, I will give it to him, and he can contact you if he wants to help... just it might not be for another month when I get back.
Are you able to read Japanese on your computer? Chances are that is how the conversation will be. Well good luck, and I will do what I can to get him to contact you.
