Laptop or desktop?

the uncontested choice would be desktop with a mega size (19" and above) low-rad low-power-consumption screen. With a slightly faster machine with bigger storage and lower power rating that you could affort by going desktop, you are doing yourself a huge favor. In your graphic design assignments, it will help you save time, electric bill, score higher for the same effort, and save your vision.Slayer4U said:

I would say a desktop.
Though if you plan to do alot more then that you might want to think harder about it.
I recently bought a laptop as im going over to Japan and i dont really wanna be taking my main desktop computer over with me because it could be quite costly. My laptop is great due to mobility etc. However it does lack the power that a desktop can provide.

not just a desktop, either a mac(running jaguar at somewhere over 3.2gigs) or an AMD powered box(with a pimped out video card).

Some Of The Big.....
Sony laptops come with a docking station and 2 speakers. My 17 inch Sony is REAL heavy and only lasts about 1 & a half hours on battery, but it comes close to desktop preformance. Watching DVD's on it is great, good picture quality. I can turn my Sony into a desktop tower in a sense by conecting a keyboard & monitor.

I would go with a Laptop, you never no when you need to be on the go to show something. What if that other person or firm you are showing stuff does not have the necessary programs to view your work? Besides laptops do the job just fine.
What kind of graphics are you going into? If it is just 2d images that you're going to, I laptop with at least 2.4Ghz, 1Gig Ram, any nVidia/ATi 128MB video card a large HDD. Also a DVD-+RW/CD-RW. I do graphics are in the 2d department. Hence my website.
But if you are going to 3d graphics are (3d max stuff) It is highly suggested to get a desktop with the new Ge-Force 6800 Ultras, 2-4 Gig Ram, and definately plenty of HDD space.

labtops do the job just fine? pshh ya ok... what about in another 6 months when your processor is obsolete.... have you ever tried upgrading a labtop? its ****** tough... everything is so small and hard to find.
desktops are better for the sole reason that its easier to upgrade... sure you cant carry it around. but 6 months down the road, it can still be a good computer

Have I updated laptops? hahaha! I fix them. The the stuff is not hard to find. The guy wanted a 'puter or laptop that will get his job done, and since I am in the same profession, I'm helpin' him out.
Yes, desktop are easier to upgrade, but you wont need to upgrade in a long time. P4 2.4Ghz HT, with 1-4Gb Ram, and a sufficient 8X graphics card is all you need. It will get the job done for graphics art.
You dont need a high end 3.8Ghz, GT6800 video card unless you're a gamer. Perhaps Slayer should be more specific on his career field in graphics design; whether it is for gaming, websites, or commerical advertising.
I've had my laptop for 1 1/2 and I'm pushing games like Lock On Modern Air Combat, and IL-2 with full graphics on this laptop with a 9600 Pro 128MB 8x AGP. ON a 2.4Ghz, 1Gb Ram. But I'm not working on any 3d modeling design. If you go into that department, you WILL NEED a desktop with the newest video cards out. 3d programs just take up to much processor cycles and memory. Pleeeeeeeeease don't make me prove wrong otherwise.

benchmarking isnt necessary... i took his supposed profession as something to do with graphic design. and rendering on any basic labtop would take forever.
if his profession is anything else, a labtop will be fine. i do all my programming on my labtop... works fine for me. im just gonna be making a new box soon, so that i can game at a higher level[rose online is glitchy for me... thats how bad my graphics card is, stupid dell labtops]

if you do graphic work, you need an external mouse (for a laptop).
positioning using the built-in sensitive field takes longer.
if you try to DRAW using that.

Alex is definately right, I do use an external mouse too. Another nifty thing to have is the artist pad with the pen. I used it once at a friends out and it is really really nice!

I have both. I love laptops. I use it often (especially when logging in to JRef). (SONY).
My desktop is cool too when typing away, more friendly for my eyes and arms (ergonomical). I have a SONY screen and Fujitsu Siemens computer.
