The city of Kyōto raised its lodging tax on Sunday for hotel and accommodation stays, with the maximum charge set at ¥10,000 per person per night. Similarly, Himeji in Hyōgo Prefecture, which hosts Himeji Castle , raised the entry fee for the World Heritage site from ¥1,000 to ¥2,500 for nonresidents aged 18 or older.


The new fees comprise the following:

• Kyōto introduced a five-tier accommodation tax, replacing the previous system and raising the maximum nightly levy from ¥1,000 to ¥10,000 per person.
• The new top rate is the highest fixed municipal lodging tax in Japan, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

New tax rates (per person, per night):

• ¥200 for stays costing under ¥6,000
• ¥400 for stays of ¥6,000 to under ¥20,000
• ¥1,000 for stays of ¥20,000 to under ¥50,000
• ¥4,000 for stays of ¥50,000 to under ¥100,000
• ¥10,000 for stays of ¥100,000 or more
• The revised system is expected to more than double lodging tax revenue to about ¥13.2 billion in fiscal 2026.
• Additional revenue will support tourism measures and cultural property restoration.
