Well I do have some fascination in the US. mainly florida where its warm during the winter <shiver> because its butt *** freezing here :D

But in all honesty you will have those who will always be interested in others, its just that with Japan its more obvious with their fascination with the US.

Hell someone should write a paper about this. If I can get a free trip to Japan I will write it 👏
 
Get started...on that paper then.....then turn it into a book and make it a bestseller so you can gain grants from various government sources, if your government fails to do so, and then they may get you a ticket to japan for further research... :D

You can always try out for one of them national geographic photo journalism stuff or some other media focused genre to get yourself over there.... :D

beware of free trips, though.....as the Prime Minister Koizumi was recently noted on saying during a political campaign speech, "There's nothing more expensive than Free stuff." :D

Never have I ever seen a much truer statement in my life.

I cannot wait until the kids are out of the house, (kids are from a previous marriage) once they are old enough wife would LOVE to go back to Japan and teach english. Maybe I can write that paper....and she can work and help me get famous enough to get alot of research grants....hmm...sigh...not going to work. You have to be able to write and well. My wife is the editor. :D

Ok, all i'm saying is that is the most egotistical, ignorant, and ethnocentrical comment i've ever heard. 'Greatest' is a matter of opinion, and america has a lot of problems that everyone overlooks and very rarely do americans accept that we have room for improvement. We've done some atrocious things, and continue to do so. It all depends on the person. And remember kids, "best" is a matter of opinion, and different strokes for different folks.
 
I'd disagree Viscious. He has full right to say that he want. He didn't flame or say that all your views are wrong, he just pointed out his own.

I'm suprised that I missed a whole thread about canada... cmon now people lets not make stereotypes about my home. Its a nice place. And Shigatsu as beautiful as you may be... don't talk to us about having balls, We fought in both World Wars, Korea, joined NATO, Fought against the Communists. Seriously though Canada's greatest contribution is either Lester B. Pearson, or Sir Fredrick Banting. Pearson may have averted nuclear war in 1957 and Banting developed Insulin.

Also the reason why canadian stars make it big is that Canada puts heavy funding into arts and also mandates that at least 30% of television shows/Radio music must be Canadian owned and Produced. Its like a proving ground for stars that would normally be snuffed out by the huge american market, so that they can get big here then get picked up for the states. Canadian films are too bad.. they are just TRES artsy. You won't see them break any blockbuster records but they always win tons of prizes and awards. But we do make some reaaaaaally good documentaries too.

Also Emik the United States is the largest contributer to the UN budget (52%). If they wanted money from the UN they would just stop paying them and use their own money themsleves. Nobody ever brings up that fact do they?
 
OH yea, i'm defenitly against the whole 'Canada is a pussy-nation' thing too. The lack of wars shows intelligence. War is nothing to be proud of, it is something to be ashamed of.

and what i was saying had nothing to do with is RIGHT to say it. It just doesn't make sense for him to say it, it is said as a fact 99% of the time, rather than an opinion.
 
Thing is, Josh has travelled the world and he has a right to say this. I work with a lifer in the US military. He says the same thing and he has lived in waaaaay more places than I or you ever will (most likely). He has lived everywhere in the world, and says the same thing. Its not simple jingoism in his case, since he is a international relations reasercher as am I. So don't discount his statement just because he is american.
 
ALso, canada has made war with EVERYBODY....

Germany, Japan, South Africa, Korea, Serbia, United States, Russia, Italy, China, the list goes on and on. Canada is not a peaceful country, don't ever get that wrong either. Neither is canada a peacekeeping country either, and it hasn't gone to war under intelligent auspices anyways.

Most companies (I taught at companies and not at schools, NOVA, or any of them funky language wannabe fly-by-night companies) that I taught at held their classes either in the morning, or the evening (before the economy fell out and the great Bubble burst). There were occasional "intensive week long classes" depending upon the need and the company, or private lessons, for those companies that could afford such luxuries. I've taught virtually all types of seminars for all ranges of students, including once for children.
Your own mileage in the teaching/instructing/coaching of Japanese students will vary.
For My own opinion of what happened to me, I'd say, companies that dealt with heavy industries tended to have students that were the least capable, since most of their workers were focused upon their jobs in Japan, and were taking these courses based upon the company forcing them to learn, rather than the students wanting to learn. Certain companies that held certain attitudes of Olde School mentality tended to have students that were also less than interested in learning, but again, that really depended upon their personal backgrounds, too.
Students that were from companies that had a vested interest in keeping in touch with their foreign counterparts were usually better than the average Japanese students, meaning that they had a fairly good grasp of the language and vocabulary, as well as experience in foreign countries, so they could at least hold a conversation on their own without looking constantly at the dictionary.
Then there were those that were in the class of Engrish is Fashionable, that were taken by people that probably looked forwards to become Jpop singers, Engrish T-shirt designers or something in between, because trying to teach them anything was like pulling wisdom teeth out with Japanese quacked out dentists...
Many of the latter also had this strange mentality (mental block) that only gaijin with blue eyes, white skin (or black with an afro) and blond hair were "good enough" to really teach Amerikan Engrish to them...my sympathies with the instructors that suffered thus....and I've known a few.... :D
I've just grown tired of having to deal with morning rush hour trains around Tokyo... :D
 
well I only say Canada has few wars because I'm an american and we have one everytime one country looks at us funny or wispers behind our backs. We're like the big drunken jerk-off jock at a party who thinks everyone is after his girlfriend. Oh GOD bless America. HAH! :o ...what a joke...
 
Perhaps you need some time away from the US shores, VB...go to some other nation to see how they fare...I used to think the same way you did about the US, but when living in another country, particularly in Japan, I found that the US isn't all that bad...yes, the media hype and idiot peoples running around are perhaps frustrating, but then the same media hype and idiot peoples are still available and in fashion regardless of which nation you go to...but, it is a view you will have to cultivate once you live in another country for a while...it won't happen by just doing a tour visit for a few weeks to a few months.... :D

it's also funny watching the Ugly Nihonjin tourists when they visit other countries, too...amerikans aren't the only drunken jerk-offs that visit other countries... :D

Ok, I'll admit, I was wrong in stating my little "Shigatsu facts" But, even though I WAS JOKING...I'm sorry.
I shouldn't really have any say about how Canada is (seeing how I've never been there) I'm only going by the opinions I heard while visiting America.
So, since I've never been there, I'm going to crash at noyhauser's place so I can learn more about this large, cold country they call Canada. Oh, and Noyhauser, could you pick up some frozen pizzas next time you are shopping- those are my favorite, and since I'll be staying for a while, can you also grab one of those pillows filled with foam. Not the cheap kind..but, the mail order kind. Thanks.
Also, if it won't be a problem, can I just take over your room? I'm sure it won't be a problem, eh? I mean...my stay is for educational purposes...

Look, I'm a kid and all but like... America is OK, we just have bombs and maybe an idiotic President, but other than that, Canada's prime minister or something isn't that great either, lots of countries have their ups and downs, look at the U.S.'s education, I mean well California, I mean i'm in 10th grade and I feel like i'm being put back in like 6th, Last month we spent all our time learning Verbs, Adjectives and something, and I don't wanna sound like i'm supposed to be in that class or anything... Maybe its just my city but its ridiculus, half the kids in my school are ignorant and it's amazing how people consider "Omg my friend isn't talking to me" a BIG situation... lol i'm not trying to sound like i'm all mature but jesus christ its degrading, think, these kids who are tagging up schools, baggy clothes and stuff are gonna be running the factories, and other stuff. I'd say education is other countries is much better in other countries, like Cuba, I'm mean the government i'm not too sure of if thats still happening but their educational system looks pretty cool, Japanese's educational system looks pretty competetive, I mean I read in a newspaper like 2 years ago 3 kids killed themselves because they weren't doing good or something and it brought shame to their family... it's really sad though... but to my main point, Every country has its Ups and Downs, no need to be like "USA is the best screw the Canadians" or vice versa, its stupid to think that another race or country is superior to the other. You just live in another land, and if you don't contribute something to make your "country" better, or fix its problem, then your not a great person in that country.
 
i completely agree with you Type-Zero, personally, i'm in 9th grade and i hate the people too. A lot of the problems with America is the people, people are too ignorant, and too stupid. They take their education for granted, they think that patriotism is total cooperation. When infact, as I believe, as the one great person said "dissent is the best form of patriotism". I mean MOST people, not ALL, so relax all you anal perfectionists.
 
I'm moving this to Chit Chat since after re-reading the entire thread, with the exception of a few posts the overall tone seems to be more a debate about the merits of individual countries (Canada, U.S. etc.) as opposed to the original poster's question.
