Jref Forum Member Dies !!!!

Great thread, Frank ! I have also thought about this before. In my case, not all forum members are unknown faces, as I have met at least a handful of you. But unknown face or not, I totally agree with Lexico when he says: "I'm as attached to my forum friends (and enemies), either as close friends (enemies) for various things we shared (fought over), or as acquaintances who politely shared this common playground in all good fun (in good verbal arguments fought out to the end). "

On a more practical note, how could a member's personal info and posts be individually deleted like that ? It seems to go against policy, so I suppose it's something that must have been specially requested...

Some people decide to change username, but do not disappear... She may have deleted some of her posts by herself though.

I was thinking the same thing...I was surprised when I read the headline - but was relieved when I read the contents....

I have wondered the same thing, when people suddenly don't log in to JRef, we would never know what the reasons were; have they died, or simply: have they lost interest...

Maybe one could do a poll on WHY they have left or are not active anymore by sending them an email telling something like: "we can see that you are no longer active in the forum, please give brief reasons:"

-No longer interested in Japan-related stuff - it was just a phase

-Have found another Japan-related forum

-Etc..,

I would say it's not that bad cause a forum is like a community, you might get info of those you cared from other members, it could be worse when making penpal, you don't even know whom you could ask.

Hm, may be someone can start a thread where you can ask info about those missed members, then if some other members knew their info they could reply in the same thread.

I had two of my friends die in 2003, after their deaths I went on the forums that we were members of and informed everyone.

I too have wondered if I suddenly die what everyone will think on the forums in usually on.

I shall write a little note to my family 'In the event of my death please visit these sites and tell 'em im dead'

I've been thinking about this alot too, maybe not just about the Jref forum, but there is other communitys where I'm am member. And I know other members there who has passed away, people I myself talked too.. and it feels a little strange to click on into their profile, reading.. knowing they'll never get online again.... ☝

I've seen my old "me" here still is.. "here", but not.. on the same way.
I can't get into it =/ and it's a shame since I had a better reputation there

Some people go on vacation for a month sometimes more. :? If I left and came back and found I was no longer a member... I would be very mad.

Send out email notifications once a member has been inactive for perhaps 3 months. Have a link they can click to deactivate their account. If they want to they can.

I'm saying this but I'm like the least technological person. Is that a possibility? :?

he comes on here (he's eddykola), so if i kick the bucket then he will be able to tell you.

See, I knew I wasn't a nerd for wondering what a forum would think if I just disappeared.

I would definitely find a way to tell you guys the news if the unthinkable happened. Be it a friend, a family member...or my ghost possessing a computer long enough to post a thread. And this thread has kind of reinforced that decision, now that I know I'm not the only one who worries about it.

I didn't really know this person but I give my condolences to their family and everyone that knew who she was. I have too thought that if I was ever to go who would let all the people that I know? Espically sine all of my passwords are in my head. I hope that my family will never have to to such a thing but, It's assured that I'll go eventually go.

I agree with lexico PENALTY CLAUSE. possibly a stiffer penalty since after the month is up people will get on their case anyway (within restraint of of the Mods and Admins).
