The "Hachiko Family" (ハチ公ファミリー) mural, a prominent public artwork at JR Shibuya Station, will be removed as part of ongoing station renovations. Kitahara Ryutaro created the mural in March 1990 to commemorate the renaming of the former Shibuya Station North Exit Plaza to "Hachiko Square. " The mural is a large ceramic relief about 4 metres tall and 11.2 metres wide.
The mural's theme, "What if Hachiko had a family?" depicts Hachiko and twenty other Akita dogs frolicking in a cosmic space with the sun, moon, stars, and a rainbow overhead. It is made up of over 1,200 pieces of Shigaraki ware ceramic tiles. The mural is part of the outer wall of JR Shibuya Station and is managed by JR East. It will be removed as part of the station's ongoing renovation project to improve convenience and alleviate congestion. While relocation was considered, it was determined that moving and restoring the ceramic tiles would be difficult. The decision to remove the mural was made after discussions with the creators. There are no plans to preserve part of the artwork or hold a ceremony.
The station's "Hachiko Gate" was relocated on 26th January, significantly changing the traffic flow around the Hachiko Exit, including making the passage outside the ticket gates one-way. Construction to remove the outer wall, including the mural, is scheduled to begin this month, with temporary fencing being erected around the artwork beforehand.
