JR East announced on Friday that it has received government approval to raise fares by an average of 7.1% starting in March 2026. This will be the company's first fare increase since its founding in 1987, following the privatisation of Japan's national railways. The fare revision is intended to help the operator of Tokyo's Yamanote Line and other routes maintain services in the face of a shrinking population and increasing operational costs.

The increases are expected to raise an additional 88.1 billion yen in revenue annually.
