I took the 4級
kyuu in San Francisco. As a bit of background info, I had taken two semesters of Japanese at the local Junior College, ending in May 2004, and kept up studying on my own.
I had feared the listening comprehension section the most, and yes, it was my most difficult part. If I got 50% correct, I'll consider myself quite fortunate. It's too bad the vocals weren't repeated just once; I mean, in real life you can ask someone to repeat what they said...even more slowly!
The other sections were a lot easier, in my opinion, so I think I did well enough on those to at least pass with the 60% required.
There was quite a large crowd at our test site, mostly high school and college aged (I'm a
bit older...) Each classroom had about 35-40 people taking the test, and I know for just the 4級 there were about 6 or 7 classrooms being used.
At least now I know what to expect, and I have a full year to study for the 3級...plenty of time to rent tons of Japanese movies and work on that listening comprehension!
