Japan's Defence Ministry has been pressed to create a dedicated office to address unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, following a meeting on Friday with a cross-party group of lawmakers. Led by former Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the group submitted a formal proposal to the current defence chief. They characterised the sightings—now officially termed unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP)—as credible and pressing national security issues.
The lawmakers warned that Japan is lagging in its response to UAP and stressed that protecting the country's airspace and territorial waters must be treated as an urgent priority. They advocated for establishing a Japanese equivalent of the U.S. All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, which was set up by the Pentagon in 2022 to coordinate investigations into UAP using a data-based, scientific methodology.
