The normal gift for Japanese weddings is cash... so you might want to rethink that. Did you have some kind of arts and crafts thing in mind?

Part of them say 30,000 yen or 50,000 yen would be better. Odd multiplies of 10,000 yen is better as being polite for the couple. Should not be 20,000 or 40,000 yen is their thought. Odd numbers can not be divided into two. Bad manner!

lol, I got this 50.000yen digi-camera, plus our parents in law wanted to give us a hotel night on Rokko for over 40.000....
Japan and money, it makes me crazy sometimes, because I am not used to it.
From family it is around 30.000 +
and from friends around 5000-10.000 yen
also, when you get money as a present, you should give a present back from around 30-50% of the amount that you received... at least that's what my wife told me.
