I don't know about living off the land but the richest traditions in Japan are going to have come from religious sects, ascetics, warriors or a combination of the above.the Rairai tribe? I coulden't find anything on them what part of japan are they located? oh and no I'm not looking for new age tribal gangs or groups. I'm simply looking for people who live off the land. A group of people seperated from the masses and technology that are in Japan.
I guarantee no one here either is going to know where to start looking for the Lost Tribes of Japan...I have heard romors that there may be one or two small tribes hidden somewhere and only known about by a few people but i dont know where to start looking.
Wow, you're lucky. That sounds like alot of fun.I am only familiar with the Rairai tribe. I often participate in their ritual.
What exactly do you mean by "tribe"? Do you mean aboriginal people indigenous to the islands since pre-Japanese times (you mentioned the Ainu)?I'm studying active Japanese tribes.

You need to start watching the Travel and Discovery channels.lots of good information!! I have been thinking about finding a tribe in Japan and live with them for a few months off the land. I still have much to learn but I'm looking for the most southern tribe the warmer the better. oh, what I mean by tribe if it wasen't clear is a group of people any people that live in japan that use no money and live off the food they hunt and gather.
I'm studying active Japanese tribes. I have found that the Ainu tribes and variations of this tribe are still active across Hokkaido. I was wondering if there may be other still active tribes in other parts of Japan Honshu kyushu shikoku or surrounding Islands. I have heard romors that there may be one or two small tribes hidden somewhere and only known about by a few people but i dont know where to start looking. any ideas to help will be appreciated!!! thank you!!!!

As in.. the guys that soup up their cars bikes and trucks with outrageous retro-race style and extreme exhaust and bodykit setups??
I LOVE those guys, fascinating, unfortunately it's a little underground for gaijins to locate and participate in these meetings unless they actually happen nearby somewhere.
Yes, "zoku" is tribe, clan or race in its original meaning.Do you mean 族 (zoku) comes from a term meaning clan or family-group, similar to the Roman gens? I know it currently means "subculture group", like コスプレ族 is something like "Cosplay Club" or "Cosplay Society". What's ながら族 (Nagara-zoku)?
I used to be able to do the TV thing when I was in high school and college, but now it seems to be too distracting. Funny how age does that to you."Nagara-zoku" comes from the Japanese "nagara" meaning "while or in the meantime."
...
This describes a person who does two or more things at the same time. When I was still a student, my friends used to marvel at how I can do my homework while listening to music and laughing at comical antics on TV. Presently, I can only manage listening to the radio or music while working...
Fascinating. Thanks for the extra info. The kanji "zoku" is also used in biology to mean "family" and in chemistry for "group (of elements)."

LOL. You remind me of Caligula. "If only all of Rome had a single neck."They're nothing more than retarded traffic terrorists breathing air I might need someday. I'd love nothing more than to string piano wire at neck height in anticipation of their passage.

http://pages.infinit.net/musis/matsu_take_eng/2_AMG_Taiko.htmlIn 1969 Tagayasu Den founded the now internationally known group Za Ondekoza on Sado Island, off the east coast of Japan. He gathered a group of dedicated youths disenchanted with modern city life to create a new kind of taiko group. Drumming became a way of life, with rigorous training, which included marathon running, and communal living. Za Ondekoza is credited for giving to taiko ensembles the worldwide fame it now has. The original members split from Tagayasu Den in 1981 to create Kodo, Den creating a new Za Ondekoza group. Kodo has quickly become the most known taiko group worldwide.
Kodo maintains the communal life developed under Tagayasu Den in the 1970s. They spend 4 months a year on Sado Island, training and practicing, 4 months touring Japan and the next 4 months touring the world. Since 1988, the group has sponsored a music festival called "Earth Celebration," Sado island then becoming a real world community.

I bitterly HATE those guys and hope that they all die lingering extraordinarily painful deaths before they have a chance to breed.
