In August 2020, Japanese trading house Mitsui and curry-rice chain Ichibanya opened the first CoCo Ichibanya restaurant at CyberHub, a commercial complex in Gurugram, near New Delhi. The restaurant has drawn many customers, although the COVID-19 pandemic kept it from reaching its target. Now, both companies are looking at opening a second restaurant.

About 70% of the shop's patrons are Indians. The eatery serves curry dishes that "taste exactly the same as what you eat at our restaurants in Japan," according to an Ichibanya spokesperson. This led the partners to believe that Japan's take on India's national dish could please local palates. They decided to expand the menu and open more outlets in the country. CoCo Ichibanya also serves popular Western-style dishes popular in Japan, including doria, a type of rice casserole, and pasta, as side menus. The outlets in Japan typically serve items like breaded shrimp and potato croquettes as toppings for curry dishes, but the Indian shops offer them separately. "We plan to introduce dishes that are cheaper than sushi and eaten by Japanese daily," said Tamotsu Nomura, head of Mitsui & Co. India's retail business.
