Correspondence colleges and courses are increasingly available across Japan, allowing students to study remotely. Post-pandemic, both students and teachers are more comfortable with online classes, leading to a rise in correspondence high school enrollments. This trend is expected to extend to higher education. Zen University, set to open next spring, will offer a sociology program focused on intelligence and informatics, with an annual tuition of 380,000 JPY. The Nippon Foundation and Dwango Co. are behind this initiative, which will be based in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture, and feature over 100 faculty members, including notable figures.
Two operators plan to launch correspondence colleges next spring, while some schools are adding new correspondence departments and faculties. Kyoto University of the Arts introduced food culture design and film courses to its correspondence program, which now has 17,000 students, a 2.3-fold increase over five years. Kindai University, Nagoya Sangyo University, and Okayama University of Science are seeking to offer correspondence programs. Up to 7,000 students are expected to enrol in new correspondence courses next spring. An educational professor, Yoichi Takahashi, noted that the pandemic has shifted perceptions of correspondence education.
