It's snowing!!!

On January 8, 1996, Philadelphia and most of the northern part of the eastern seaboard were slammed by what had to have been a record snowfall as we got thirty, I repeat, T-H-I-R-T-Y inches of the dreaded white stuff in one day. Here in Philly, the city was effectively paralyzed, roads and highways were impassable, mass transit shut down while small streets, like the one I live on became passable replicas of Ice Station Zebra.

Back in the 90's, the city didn't have snow plows take care of residential streets, only main thoroughfares, so, in the end, entire neighborhoods all over the city were left to fend for themselves. We wound up having to pay an enterprising gent with a burly pickup truck complete with a plow some three hundred bucks to plow our street, and even after that, we had to dig out our own cars. It took the better part of a whole week before we could drive on and off our block.

As you can see via the enclosed pics, this was what my block looked like the day after the storm. And THAT'S why I have no use for snow!!!

In south Texas it's very unlikely to see snow, we had snowflurries around in San Antonio for about two minutes, they evaporated as soon as they touched the ground's surface.

Heres hoping I get to see or go somewhere snow is plentiful. It just makes the winter season more seasonal.

Yo, Carth! Perhaps you can answer this question for me since you're in the Longhorn State. I was listening to the all-news radio station up here in Philly yesterday and heard a report that a town in Texas got half a foot or so of snow but will have to wait for it to melt because that municipality doesn't have snowplows. That sounds absolutely incredible to me! Did you hear about that, and is it true? Inquiring minds wanna know!

I know Houston had some snow, light flurries I may add. Yeah, it does snow occassionally in Texas, but that is farther north along the panhandle. Like in the hillcountry, which is about four hours away from San Antonio.

I'm surprised in Philly they're talking about us, considering we're Cowboy country (You know, Philly and the Eagles).

Though, let me say, I'm not a Cowboys fan, I actually do like the Eagles.

Speaking of the dreaded white stuff, we got around an inch of snow overnight. Nothing to write home about, but given how cold it is right now, it might be around on the ground for most of the day. I can live with that.
