If you enjoy it and it doesn't consume too much of your time, sure, it's fine.

If you're doing it because you feel some kind of pressure to get "likes" from random internet people, then you should probably take a break.

What about you, do you play social media?

I rarely (almost never) post updates and never play social media games.
I read my friends' Facebook and Twitter feeds to see what they are up to, mostly.
I'm very much into Japanese sake so I also follow sake brewers and restaurants, etc. to catch the latest sake news.

I think the best way to use (I don't consider it "play") social media is by following people who talk about things you're interested in. But that's just my opinion.

How did you improve your Japanese, while in Japan? Mingle with Japanese people more or read more Japanese materials?

Yes, both of those.
I was also immersing myself in the language (talking, reading, speaking, watching Japanese media) as much as possible long before I came to Japan.

August 2005. (Before that, I had also studied abroad for a year when I was in university, and visited once on a family trip when I was 14.)

Do you balance between mingling and also self-learning?

Social media is very addicting, especially Instagram...
Yes. It's quite literally designed to be that way.

(Though personally speaking, I've never been able to get into Instagram. I guess I find the text-centric nature of Twitter and Facebook more compelling than the visual-centric nature of Instagram/TikTok/etc.)

How old are you now? Are you married with a Japanese?
By the way, I answered your question via private message (if you still care about the answer).

If you spend just minutes in total, everyday, then its not a big deal, it is a problem when one spends many hours on them

Also if you feel too much urge to use them, try to periodically spend a few days off without any social media, it could help some

fbeumt.jpg I let Facebook eat up way too much time in my life , but I'm addicted.
