internet speeds.. what do you get?

Hello,
I am staying in Japan for a month. The Apartment i rented has internet but the speed is apalling.. I know i should not be screwing around on the computer when i am in such a beautiful country, but i am curious I am getting less than 5 MBdown and i think less that 1 up..
is this normal or are they padding down the signal?. the modem is called wiMax and the Building is in Roppongi.

May be they're on the old ADSL network. Most of my friends use fibre, which gives you blazing fast speed. Try to visit the website: IP Address Geolocation to Identify Website Visitor's Geographical Location, it has information about the connection type, though not 100% correct

I have fiber optic speed.
Twenty minutes away in farm country my coworker has ADSL slow speed. Depends where you live sometimes.

Hey, thanks for the replies.
I had no idea that my post was even replied to.. I'll have to re check my settings. I am in Roppongi. The Modem they gave me in the APT is a small white cube looking thing about the size of a Pack of smokes. It's an NEC Wimax...

I'll try that site and see what i find out... I'll have to check back here until i figure out why the outbound E-mail does not work.


I tried that site. Yes, I am on the old skool DSL from KDDI.I thought my speeds were quicker closer to the Airport...
What can you expect for 2K month.

WiMax is a wireless technology that was an option as a 4G standard before LTE won. In the US, Clear Wireless (and Sprint) use WiMax, albeit not exactly the same but mostly similar, if you want a reference.

Unfortunately you're pretty stuck with what you have since even softbank's rental only rent's the 7.6mbit/s device. Of all the ones I've seen they are the fastest when you use their Ultra4G service. But since you are in Roppongi, try out Wi2 300 they have pretty fast service from what I've used, if you have signed up for Starbucks Japan's wifi as well it will be about the same speeds as wi2 runs their free wifi for them. The cost for the normal wi2 service is 380 yen/mo but has unlimited internet, and I've found that they are pretty easy to find in Tokyo.
