On 24 April 2022, Iga City in Mie Prefecture inaugurated a "ninja gym" open to its students all year round, reviving its local ninja traditions popularised by iconic anime series like Naruto. Courses are offered in traditional ninja skills such as shuriken throwing or shooting. The idea of a ninja dōjō wasn't new: local schools specialising in ninja classes had existed for some time but were limited to the "Iga Ueno Ninja Festa" in April and May. Visitors will be able to gain insights into the world of ancient warriors and pick up some of their skills.

Guided tours are offered by Iga Ueno DMO, a local tourism association dedicated to developing local tourism in Mie. Visitors can participate in courses offered at five locations around Iga. Some lessons are held on the grounds of Iga Ueno Castle, throwing star-shaped or stick-shaped shuriken daggers, shooting an old gun and even an ancient cannon. Participation in the courses comes at 1,500 JPY per capita and culminates in a formal graduation ceremony where participants receive certificates. Depending on their performance, participants will graduate as jōnin (上忍), the highest ninja rank, chūnin (中忍), medium-ranked ninja, or genin (下忍), the lowest rank. By completing special tasks, you can increase your score to rise in rank towards the end. Other details, such as wearing authentic ninja attire, also earn extra points. The training workload is up to the participants, so it is possible to complete different lessons in one day or spread the participation over several days. According to the official website, participants can graduate in as short as three hours.
