I Would Like to Know Something

Hey guys.
A while back... I saw this woman get scolded for something. I was standing there drinking my soda and watching. I wanted to know something... so here is the story:

This woman was standing behind a man who was a doctor (he wore one of those golden tags). She tapped him and asked, "you are a doctor, right?" and he replied, "yes." She then asked for something (bluntly, I believe) and then said, "But I have no money..." and gave one of those 'I Don't Know" hand gesture and her eyes looked a little big and she was fidgeting a little with her words. He then scolded her and told her she was rude.

Now, in the text bold above... I know that what she said was rude... but tell me why that was a rude thing to say.

Now, in the text bold above... I know that what she said was rude... but tell me why that was a rude thing to say.

Although what she said must have been "rude" as you say, it is difficult to answer your question because it is not clear what she said except "But I have no money." That by itself does not sound rude. Could you be a bit more specific ? Then maybe someone might be able to give you an opinion, but without the details, it's difficult to say. And also, why did you think "that" was rude :?

Was she trying to get free advice? I'm not in Japan, but I know doctor aquaintances that I never directly ask advice from because I feel that would be awkward. Sometimes, in the course of a conversation something comes up, like I explained how I was sick and my ears get plugged up in airplanes, and he went into detail about how that happens, and what to do about it. But I would never intentionally ask something unless they were good friends. Because I'm not paying them, and it's their off time. It sounds like that may be a similar situation - I think it would be rude to ask a doctor a health question about yourself like that. But then, I don't know exactly what they were talking about or what their relationship was.

Otherwise, from that sketchy snippet of a conversation, I would've concluded that she was asking the doctor for a very big favor that entails compensation. Maybe the doctor thought it was rude to ask for something so big for free... ☝
