i need to get eyeglasses in tokyo, how much will it cost?

hello guys,

i'm leaving to tokyo in 2 days, and today i broke my glasses! dammit!

i'm wondering how much getting frames and prescription lenses will cost in tokyo? in seoul it would cost me around, 10000-15000 yen for a fly pair of frames and lenses for my unevenly damaged eyes... (my left eye is much worse than my right and that makes the cost go up)

so i was wondering how much it costs in tokyo to get new eyeballs.

Aren't there places in the US where they can make new eyeballs for you in "1 HOUR"?
I'm pretty sure I have seen them at malls. Maybe the ones they offer are not fly enough for you.

You don't need health insurance in the USA to get glasses. And yes there are places that make your glasses in an hour. My chihuahua puppy chewed mine 2 days before arriving in Japan. I went to Lens Crafters and in 1 hour had a new pair of glasses.

Zoff

I think the cheapest glasses you can find in Tokyo are sold at a chain called Zoff. One of their branches is located in Harajuku close to the JR train station. Across the street at the top of the boulevard whatever it's called.

thank you, this is the kind of info i was looking for.

and i went to not lenscrafters, but another chain in my mall. and the eye exam w/o insurance was 69.99, lens was another thing, and then frames were another.

i'm used to paying 100-150 dollars in korea, flat, with no more extra. but then in the us, there's paper work, and fees after fees.

70 dollars is cheap for an eye exam. If your prescription is less than 2 years old you don't need an exam at lens crafters....thought you might like to know that....

may I get into this discussion to ask somebody to explain me how it is working for buying glasses here in Japan? I mean what is procedure? eye-check in store, and other details... I love wearing glasses, and have two, but wouldn't mind having one more still, my Japanese abilities are way too low to ask store attendant about this... (but it might be easier if i know what to expect)

Eye exams are done in the store. Japan has no requirement that the exam be done by a licensed optician. In fact, I don't think Japan has the equivalent of a Doctor of Optometry. The exams are done by employees of the store and these days are often done primarily by computerized equipment which measures your eyeballs and figures out the appropriate prescription. To confirm the prescription it is typical to put trial lenses in a pair of test frames (the same as you've seen at any optician's). Instead of reading letters on a chart you will most typically see a circle with a small segment cut out. You indicate by word or gesture where the cut is: top, bottom, left, right. That's about it.
