I don't know what my tattoo means

Has anybody found the answer to the original question yet?

So you find it funny when people are discriminated agianst because of the colours of thier skin? I find that sad...

Tattoos are a choice. Race is not. I find it very funny when people who make very stupid choices end up getting exactly what they deserve. This is why I also enjoy the Darwin Awards.

Please guys, HELP!
I tattooed two japanese hieroglyphs, which I saw from an engraving by Kitagava Utamaro, but I can't find anywhere what they mean.
I would be very very thankful if anyone would like to translate them to me.

If anyone wants to help I'll send him/her pictures.
Thank you
Poli, Bulgaria

you sir, are an idiot

There is a huge difference between the two.... A couple having sex while flying a plane and crashing into someones corn field = Darwin Award and stupid..getting what you deserve etc.

Having somebody purposely discriminate agianst you because you look different ei: different colour(s) of skin is biggotry at the LEAST and the law agrees with me..even in the case of body art.

Huge difference...sorry you cant see that.

You remind me of the character in the movie Moon Child who wanted to be a Ninja . So he "thought" it would be a good idea to get a tattoo that said Ninja. Only the one he got meant KITCHEN. The moral to this store or point in case...YOU'RE SO SCREWED and to make matters worse his friends knew what his tattoo really meant and never said a word but kept laughing really out loud :devilish: OH...YOU'RE SO SCREWED :D :D :D :D :D :devilish: :devilish:

But really, I don't mean to make fun. However, you should go to reference book store on the subject and translate what it means. :) :geek:

That was actually the movie that "pinkkillerkisou" was talking about.

Anyway.... hm.... tact?

No, I can, and what you seem to be unable to process is the difference between a choice (tattoo), and between a genetically-determined physical quality (racial characteristics).

Discriminating against someone based on something they have little or no control over (e.g., race, handicaps, etc.) is moronic at best, especially when it comes to something like 'race', which doesn't even really *exist* in any meaningful scientific sense.

Discriminating against a person based on the decisions they have made is, well, something so basic that I think the only words I can give for it are 'common sense'. Would you hire an employee to run your books who had served time in prison for embezzlement? How about a drug addict to work in a pharmacy, distributing medications? Would you hire someone who never bathes to walk around in public and promote your fine line of perfumes?

All of these things are CHOICES. Things that you, as a sentient entity, make a conscious effort to do, and as such, you receive the benefits or detriments that come from those choices. If you choose to get tattoos, that's just fine, but don't call it 'discrimination' or 'racism' if somebody else chooses not to like them. I don't have to like your clothing, taste in music, political opinions, or brand of deodorant, either.

The only difference that a tattoo has, compared to any of these other things, is that it's a permanent choice, like getting plastic surgery. Which means that, for better or for worse, no matter what society's whims, you are stuck with the results of that choice. Laser removal is an option, but it leaves some pretty nasty scars that don't always heal well.

So, how does this relate to my dislike of tattoos?

Someone else in this thread mentioned that 'the only bad choice is one that doesn't give you other choices', and a tattoo fits into that category. When I see someone with a tattoo, I instantly know that they lack a certain type of foresight, because they have made a choice which they cannot reverse. Someone who chooses to drop out of school can eventually graduate. Someone who buys weird clothing can change their style. Someone who never showers can take a bath. All of these choices can be reversed; the people have, even if only unconsciously, left themselves room for change.

A tattoo does not grant this luxury. When I see someone with a tattoo, I know that their planning horizion is five years at best. On top of that, MOST tattoos are part of a social trend, which means that the recipient of the tattoo is likely quite bendable to peer pressure, rather than making their own decisions.

This is not the sort of person I want making any sort of important decision.

I have to agree with some of what Matadon says above.

I saw a homeless guy at Victoria station who had (rubbish!) tattoos all over his face.
I wonder how much this affected his prospects in life and his subsequent downward spiral into a life of begging.

I know we shouldn't judge too much on appearances, but unless you are living in some alternative community, having your whole face tattooed is not going to open any doors for you.

P.S I don't have a problem with more discreet tattoos - such as ones that say 'I love Richard' on a ladie's bum!...sorry, couldn't stay serious for long. Ha ha..Rich303

For those of you who is still curious about Poli's tattoo, I just got permission today. It is actually very pretty.
Are you ready?
It says "Uta-maro-work or wrote", which is the artist's name Poli had mentioned in his first post, written in old Japanese style text.

They look quite beautiful. What calligraphic style are these ?
Was it expensive to get those tattoos ?
Did poli tell you what they meant ? :?

The style looks like hiragana but it probably isn't. I plan on getting a tattoo as well...i just have to translate it into calligraphy.

Beautiful

:-) Ah.. I was tactful note: (Poli got a tattoo without first researching the translation and now this persons wants help translating the meaning) Hm.... Although I have a tattoo of the word "SKIN" (no one can see it),I also can respect pinkkillerkisou's opinion on the subject of tattoo's. One must decide the importance of such (tattoos) before endeavoring in fads or just because my friend says it's cool(some workstations are very dirty too). I researched and pondered over the decision to get a tattoo and It was for me only! Not to mention the parlor was a susperb establishment as well as the individual who did the work! One must be responsible for their actions and it should weight heavily on them not others

Note: (By the way Poli it looks very beautiful to the eye)

On Modesty and Artistic Judgement

I think this thread serves as a good a lesson in humility and not to quickly pass judgement on someone distressed. Please look at Poli's initial wording of the question
I tattooed two japanese hieroglyphs, which I saw from an engraving by Kitagava Utamaro.
My questions for people who went on putting down all the 'thoughtless people' who put 'mindless phrases' on their bodies that will stay there 'forever.'

1. The idea of "Poli without even thinking straight, accidentally hitting upon the famed artist Kitagawa Utamaro's signature, without the slightest help of kanji knowledge" What is an honest chance of that happening ?

The fact that he did it without all the fancy references available to us can be only explained by artistic intuition. This tells us that he had studied the artist's work very thoroughy to be able to appreciate the various features of his artworks. In one guess, he got to the artist's signature. Does he still sound like an ignorant guy with the slightest idea what he is doing ?

(Sorry Poli, I'm just arguing with the less sophisticated membership.)

2. Now I know little about Bulgarian social interaction, but I would assume that downplaying one's achievement or pretending a little bit of self-humiliation is part of the common interpersonal protocol there. To read everything that Poli said literally would be to exhibit one's ignorance or cultural insensitivity. Now how did I say that being ignorant myself ? Without ever having studied Bulgarian history or sociology ? I could do it because it's common courtesy. *does a symbolic smack on the forehead*

3. Contrary to common belief, not all tattoos stay forever. There are erasable tattoos, shallow tattoos, and laser theraphy to erase an unwanted tattoo. So I think it is wrong to blindly accuse a tattooed person on ground of permanance. The surgery might be rather expensive, but maybe he's married to one laser surgeon, or has very extensive health coverage, or simply stinking rich. :)

O, well, I feel relieved after ranting out on some of you who I think did Poli wrong with your callous remarks. The other reasonings not directly concerning Poli was good I think nevertheless. Do carry on, fellow forumers ! 🙂

I once knew a girl who got the kanji for what she thought said 'naughty' tattooed on her hip bone, quite close to where naughty things happen. Anyway she would prance around and show it off at times, only to be laughed at by a group of Japanese and Chinese who told her it said disgusting!

I think you are doing to others what you didn't like they did to Poli, Lexico.

adressing your first point)
the fact that he is not 100% certain, yet still goes and gets the tattoo before making sure voids any redeeming qualities based on successful research. Obviously he didn't know enough, or he wouldn't have posted the question at all.

Also, he never said he wanted the artist's signature. he said he got it off an engraving the artist had made.

What if he hadn't wanted someone else's name printed on his body?

adressing point number 2)
Even if he did downplay his own abilities, it doesn't erase the fact that he wasn't 100% certain. The self inflicted pwn3d stays.

adressing point number 3)
He was lucky. the tattoo is damned fine caligraphy (but he could tell that since the first time he saw it of course), and the message was what he wanted.
But removal surgery is not something to be trifled with. Judging by the redness around the tattoo, it's not one of those that goes away, it's the real thing.

And laser surgery? ever seen anyone that has gotten that? they leave huge scars.

Money? the tattoo alone is a big wad of cash, and the laser surgery is good amount aswell... just because you're loaded doesn't mean you'll want to lose all that cash just because you couldn't wait two days to ask someone what it meant first. It's still stupid.

in conclusion, he got a mighty fine tattoo with something that he'll proudly be able to show to people that understand it aswell as people that just appriciate it for the artistic value, but the heckeling stays, for the decision to have it made before making sure was still unbelievably dumb.

Your point is well taken, however, you are excercising hypocricy unless you can explain how that makes negative criticism okay while countering it is not.
adressing your first point)
the fact that he is not 100% certain, yet ...
Artistic judgements are beyond your criticism. It's called poetic license. He did his research beyond what you can possibly imagine. As for the signature, in fact that's what he wanted; therefore you can safely stay your jumping judgements.
point 2)...
Repetitive, and empty; already covered in 1.
point 3)...
Fair enough; it can go either way. But again, it's a personal decision a criticism of which is best kept to the critic's self.

Your condescending language is highly objectionable. You don't go around ridiculing a member with such words. Please reserve your debasing vocabulary to yourself.
