Well, first off... are you nuts! For all you know your tattoo could be something gang related or something like the kanji for kitchen or something cheesy like that.

Secondly, tattoos aren't the greatest thing in the world to do to yourself. You know most places don't sterilize their equipment according to "health codes". A friend of mine got HIV from a getting tattoo with an unsteterilized needle.

Maybe I'm being mean but I do agree with those who say they hope it means stupid gaijin. I do hope it is something that will give me a good laugh.

I think that is a lil harsh of a response it's almost like askign him to die.

I should have took more time to choose my words more wisely. Funny thing, a Japanese friend of mine ran into a man around here who had the characters for "kitchen" tattooed on the back of his neck. Turns out the guy just saw 2 characters that looked "cool" and asked for those.

i cant understand how people can put a mark on their skin if they don't know what it means. i mean if i put "honor" on my skin and nobody can understand it because its some kanji whats the point? if it is in western letters though it MAKES a point even though its pretty retarded because there is no such thing as honor in our modern society (was replaced by pride imo)

As for why a gaijin might get a tattoo of a kanji character. Personally i've been thinking for the past year of getting one. It wouldn't be for the sake of someone else, i don't care if someone else can read it or not. I'd get it because it would mean something to me.

I went to Disneyland in the US last month and saw a ton of Kanji tattoos mostly "chikara" and similar ilk, but if I saw a cup noodle tattoo I think I would wet myself laughing

Did your friend go to a reputable shop? Any reputable shop will have an autoclave that is inspected monthly and will have to have passed a spore test...
The chance of getting aids from a tattoo needle is very, very low...unless the needles are not cleaned at all...most likely a job done by a friend or someone working out of thier house?

I have kanji on me but i took the time to research it and I KNOW what it means and so do my asian friends. It also does have meaning to me. I can understand where Sakai-san is coming from.

Personally, I hate tattoos, and I doubly hate tattoos in languages the tattooee doesn't understand. In addition to being a hardcore geek, I'm also a fitness nut, and pretty much everyone at the gym, flabby or not, has some type of tattoo. Hell, I've even had people ask me why I don't have one -- like this makes me a leper or something.

I honestly find it funny as hell when people with tattoos go to places like Japan, and discover that they can't get into the onsen or public baths because of their ink.

I read it the first time...and where I come from such discrimination agianst a person with different colours of skin (wether that be black, white, yellow, green, orange etc) is a criminal offense punishable by jail time.

Unfortunately its not a criminal offence in Japan.

Heck as far as I know, in Australia having excess ink will work against you in job interviews etc.

If you fear you have been discriminated agiast then you can file a complaint..many companies are very wary of this and are liberal in thier hiring process. In most cases if you have the skills then you will be hired..regardless of your skin colour(s).

He is talking about having TATTOOS. Not SKIN COLOUR. Being discriminated against because you have tattoos is the current topic of conversation. Not skin colour.

In my humble oppinion

comparing racial discrimination and "tattoo discrimination" demeans those who have fought so hard against the former.

A tattoo is a statement, these statements range almost infinitely from public shows of pride and unity like a "semper fi" on the forearm, to an extremely personal show of love and commitment like a lovers name over your heart. In the case of large scale tattoos displayed on publicly visible parts of the body the message seems to me to be "I have no respect for society's rules and limitations". This may be a valid opinion and I feel that anyone who wants to make that statement should be allowed to do so. However if I am an employer who is looking for someone to deal with the public I would feel that those tattoos would send the wrong message to my prospective customers and I think I should have the right to say I don't want you to work for me. I personally have nothing against "really inked" people, but I think I should have the right to hire someone based on what is right for my company.

On the other hand race is not a statement it is a fundamental part of who we are. To allow me to say "my target customer is a neonazi in Illinois so I can't hire a black woman" is morally wrong and an entirely different case. To try to piggyback "ink discrimination" with race discrimination pays a grave disservice to King, Parks, Mandela and many others who fought/fight against discrimination.
