I was thinking something along the lines of "おすすめの食料とかありますか?" but I don't know, what I want to be able to do is to ask the waiter or whoever for any recommended meals on a menu since I'm gonna have a hard time reading kanji on the menu. 食料/食事 doesn't feel like the right noun I'm looking for so I'd appreciate some input on this.

おすすめは?

I actually thought about that beforehand since it could probably work in context, but do you think the phrase "おすすめの食料とかありますか?" sounds irregular or unfamiliar?

You can use メニュー instead of 食料, but, as Mike-san pointed out, it's perfectly fine just to use おすすめ, like as おすすめとかありますか?/おすすめって何かあります?
