How many themeparks do you have in Tokyo?

I heard that the Japanese are nuts about amusement parks and that there are over 40(!) only in the Tokyo area. Is that true?
I'm a roller-coaster fanatic myself, so maybe i should plan for a few days more on my someday-trip-to-Japan.

When I was in Japan (around Osaka) I went to UniversalStudiosJapan amusement park...
& thought it was *great!*...
though *soooooooo* American...
it was like a bit American advertisement in Japan!
(but it *was* good!)
I also went to a more "Japanese" amusement park called "Dreamland"... which I found to be really great too!...
the wooden rollercoaster there was really scary stuff!!!

'course, In my country, there aren't really any of these kinda amusement parks... so they both seemed very big & special to me... I was amazed at so much land being taken up by these places!!!
though I imagine some people from America & other places will have seen these kinda things before & wouldn't have been so impressed!... my J-girlfriend has been to DisneyLandTokyo & she thought it was really great...
but she has also been to amusement parks in America & says that theirs are much bigger & better!...
so I guess... it depends on what you're used to really, whether or not you're gonna be impressed by the amusement parks!...
personally, I thought Dreamland was wonderful 'cos it had a really old style kinda "haunted house" walkthrough thing...
not scary in the least but quite amusing & interesting to see! ... it reminded me of going to such things years ago as a kid...
but like I said... that wooden rollercoaster....*scary!!!*

Tokyo Disneyland is in Chiba smart-stuff and I bet all other responses/responders will name theme parks that aren't in Tokyo like Dadio saying Universal is in Osaka so be prepared to be flying over to an airport other than Narita if your main objective is finding a descent coaster.

I haven't been to the states yet. So i don't know the "american standard".
But we have some really great roller-coasters here in europe too. Actually the biggest wooden roller-coaster of europe is in Germany. It's the Colossos in the "Heide Park". Imho it's kind of dull though. The height is gigantic and the first descent is very very very steep. It's like free fall. But after that it's only rolling out a few smaller hills up and down, through a few turns and that's it.

The Wild-Wild-West roller-coaster in the Warner-Bros.-Movie-World on the other hand is not as high as the Colossos but fast as hell. So fast that your tears are dragged to your ears by the airstream. And when you open your mouth to cheer the same happens to your saliva.
oh boy, it was so cool.
Maybe i exaggerate a bit, but that's what i remember.
It's my fouvorite roller-coaster by far. (so far)

I know they have a small theme park in Suidobashi, and I think it's called "rakuen", right by the Tokyo dome. Other than that I guess there is also a sega theme park in Odaiba(Which is pretty fun by the way), so those two seem to be in the general Tokyo vicinity. I personally think Tokyo Disneyland rides are pretty weak, and would not be on my top reccomendation list. However, if you are a fan of not-so-scary rides, then this would be probably ideal. If you want to travel towards Hakone, they have Fuji Kyuu Highland, and their jet coaster is pretty dope.

That coaster you are looking for is at Cedar Point, just west of Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
I am from Cleveland and spent all summer at Cedar Point while growing up.
Currently I live and the Tokyo/Yokohama area and there are quite a few amusement parks here, not quite 40, unless they are counting all of the places that have just a couple of rides. Also when a lot of people refer to something being in Tokyo they might not always mean the city proper, but the outskirts and neighboring areas as well.

Off the top of my head, in Tokyo (& within day-trip distance of Tokyo) I can think of:

Hanayashiki -- in Asakusa, behind the Sensoji temple; small, similar to the traveling circuses in the U.S.

Sega Joypolis -- Shinjuku, Yokohama & Odaiba; video-game arcades but with some indoor rides

Korakuen -- amusement park right next to Tokyo Dome. You can't miss it if you're on the chuo/sobu line and looking out the window.

Yomiuri Land -- not sure where it's at, it's in Tokyo somewhere.

Sanrio Land -- ditto

Sea Paradise -- amusement park near the ocean in Yokohama.

Toshimaen -- amusement/water park in Nerima-ku

Namco Wonder Egg -- small amusement park in Tokyo near Futako Tamagawa station.

Fujikyu Highlands -- outside of Tokyo towards Mt. Fuji

Sagamiko Park -- in nearby Kanagawa-ken

If you counted every little amusement, I suppose the number could get up to 40 but I think the number is exaggerated. In any case, there are plenty of amusements to go to in and around Tokyo.
