What's up my Japanese lovers, wait a minute, er I mean, Japanese Language Learners! I was curious how many hours a day do you listen to Japanese? I shoot for as long as possible...which isn't really an answer, but...I feel like my comprehension is growing stronger. Japanese people speak VERY FAST, haha, so I've been upping my efforts to get the language into my subconscious mind.

I pretty much gave up learning Japanese about 20 years ago. But I listen to Japanese every day either from my wife -- since the communication medium between us is Japanese. Also the TV. Plus a little bit at the office.

Oh wow, that's pretty cool. Why did you stop?

I've reached a comfortable functional level combined with lack of time and motivation.
Also I don't live in Japan any more. Plus even if I did it's so easy to get by now with easy real-time translation.
My reading level is low -- I can't comfortably read a newspaper -- but for daily life it's fine. I can read over 90% of this menu for example and anything I'm not sure about I can easily look up on my phone.

It's quite the same here. I wish I had more motivation to expand the basics, lol.

I kind of looked at learning Kanji as too time consuming. Having a good speaking vocabulary and knowing Katakana & Hiragana allowed me to deal with day to day life in Fukuoka.

Oh wow, that's a very good point. I'm glad you were able to handle daily life with that knowledge. Kanji is my favorite part! I always take assurance in knowing that even Japanese people struggle with Kanji once and a while. It's kind of like not knowing how to spell a word in English. HAHA

Oh snap, that's the owner? Oh no... I hope he gets back into it. I've noticed a lot of people are getting into Japanese these days, possibly because of the popularity of anime, but many do not stick with it once they realize how much time you actually have to "study" and not just watch anime. HAHA

I feel my powers of understanding the Japanese language increasing. I listen to that crispy articulated Japanese on the NHK News app on my iPhone everyday for hours. I've learned so many words, and transitionary phrases. I'm super excited. I'm watching Zeta Gundam right now in Japanese with no subtitles, and I can modestly say that I can understand maybe a conservative 30% of what's being said. Pretty cool! I also listen to a lot of casual Japanese on YouTube like the Easy Japanese Podcast, I think they're siblings, and so many more, but I love Gunpla so I watch Amuros's Gunpla corner a lot. What are you guys doing?
