The way あの is being used here confuses me too (I've never seen it this way), but I'm convinced that that's due to my inexperience, not because it is grammatically incorrect or something.
Anyways, I believe Mike is correct; "It's Totoro (over there)!" is indeed what the sentence actually says. But on the other hand, Toritoribe-sensei does make a good point on how it can be interpreted differently based on context (My mind seems to think of the person saying that sentence pointing towards Totoro for someone else, selecting it as a target for some action...).
